This page hosts requests for global permissions. To make a request, read the relevant policy (global rollback , global sysop , global rename , …) and make a request below. Explain why membership is needed for that group, and detail prior experience or qualifications.

This is not a vote and any active Wikimedia editor may participate in the discussion.

Global rollback and global interface editor requests require no fewer than 5 days of discussion while abuse filter helper and maintainer requests require no fewer than 7 days. Global renamer and global sysop requests require no fewer than 2 weeks of discussion. For requests that are unlikely to pass under any circumstances, they may be closed by a steward without further discussion (after a reasonable amount of input).

Requests for global rollback permissions[edit]

Symbol comment vote.svg Please be sure to follow the instructions below:
Your request might be rejected if you don't follow the instructions, and not doing so would reflect poorly on your suitability.
Please also review the Global rollback policy.
Instructions for making a request

Before requesting, make sure that: You have sufficient activity to meet the requirements to be allocated the global rollback flag

To make a request
Copy the template below to the bottom of this section and explain of why you need the access and why you're suitable.
=== Global rollback for {{subst:u|{{subst:REVISIONUSER}}}} ===
{{sr-request
 |status    = <!-- don't change this line -->
 |domain    = global <!-- don't change this line -->
 |user name = {{subst:REVISIONUSER}} <!-- don't change this line unless you're nominating another user -->
}}
::''Not ending before {{subst:#time:j F Y H:i|+5 days}} UTC''

The request will be approved if consensus to do so exists after a period of consideration of no less than 5 days (other than requests that are unlikely to pass under any circumstances, no other exceptions are allowed , no matter how obvious the result may seem). This is not a vote, and all input is welcome. Stewards will determine whether consensus exists; when doing so it is likely that the weight given to the input of those involved in cross-wiki work will be most influential.

}}
:''Not ending before {{subst:#time:j F Y H:i|+2 week}} UTC''

The request will be approved if consensus to do so exists after a period of consideration of no less than two weeks (no exceptions are allowed no matter how obvious the result may seem). This is not a vote, and all input is welcome. Stewards will determine whether consensus exists; when doing so it is likely that the weight given to the input of those involved in cross-wiki work will be most influential. }}
:''Not ending before {{subst:#time:j F Y H:i|+2 week}} UTC''

The request will be approved if consensus to do so exists after a period of consideration of no less than two weeks (no exceptions are allowed no matter how obvious the result may seem). While all input is welcome, there is a hard 80% support requirement for this role as per the global renamer policy.

WMF Researcher for Leaderboard[edit]

I need the ability to view deleted revisions and suppressed data (note: currently I have AFH). The reasons are multifold:

  • I occasionally help other wikis with abuse filters. Some wikis have a policy of immediately revision-deleting edits from LTAs - as an AFH, I can't view them which makes it hard for me to help that wiki. I've had to ask them to undelete such revisions just for me, which is not desirable. This can be satisfied by the global deleter right, which brings me to the second point:
  • Additionally, I'm working on an automated mechanism for detecting LTAs, which means that I need the highest-quality abuse filter data I can get to feed to a neural network. In many cases such data has been suppressed, which is not desirable.
  • In rare cases, I may need this for other purposes (such as Global statistics) - for example I had a recent case where, due to an oversight bug, the bot was printing out a suppressed username (and I was notified when that person emailed me) - task for this is private. The need for this should be rare in practice, however, as I can just PM a steward.
  • The data would be stored in a Cloud VPS instance, and I've mentioned this to T&S.

It should be noted that no such "global oversight" role exists. Hence (and given this non-standard request), I've checked with WMF Trust and Safety, who indicated that

  • they are explicitly willing to give me the WMF_Researchers role (providing view-only access to deleted and suppressed data)
  • they want me to "tell the community that WMF research group has the necessary access and T&S is happy to explore the idea to make an exception for the short term if there is a community consensus for your use case" and that "that needs some kind of community consultation so that the community is aware of this challenge and can explore alternatives in the future"

Thanks in advance - please let me know if you have questions, concerns or if you think a different right is better. Note that abusefilter-hidden-log will need to be added to the WMF Researcher role as well.

P.S: there were a couple of proposals to add the ability to view deleted revisions in 2022 (to AFH), but the community did not approve for that.

--Leaderboard (talk) 16:33, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Time2wait.svg On hold @Leaderboard: as you noted, this group and its associated access are normally managed by WMF, currently documented for legal research. In your comment above you mention that they are both willing to do this for you, but in apparent contrast also saying there needs to be a "community consultation". Assuming the later is needed, some sort of discussion to show support appears to be required first (thus the "on hold" nature of this for the moment). Is the expectation that consensus of all the communities whose suppressed content you want to review be shown? — xaosflux Talk 18:12, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Xaosflux: "Is the expectation that consensus of all the communities whose suppressed content you want to review be shown?" - no, I wasn't told anything like that. I was advised to ask at SRGP or a similar place at Meta. Leaderboard (talk) 18:14, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Leaderboard "the community" in if there is a community consensus for your use case appears to be the global community, as such indeed the Meta-Wiki is the project to have the discussion, what we need to determine is how much invitation would be needed to community members. — xaosflux Talk 18:19, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The stewards team is reviewing this, as to what the minimum next step will be. — xaosflux Talk 09:44, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Currently pending feedback from WMF. — xaosflux Talk 23:28, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
On hold, WMF T&S/Legal is currently reviewing things on their end. — xaosflux Talk 01:19, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
