Mitochondrial distribution
This image shows 3D electron microscopy reconstruction of mitochondria in hippocampal neurons from an animal model brain. Axons are colored in pink, dendrites in red, blue and green, and mitochondria are purple. Image credit: Mitochondrial Neurobiology and Therapeutics Laboratory of Eugenia Trushina, Ph.D.

Mitochondrial health and function
This image shows analysis of mitochondrial morphology and integrity in dermal fibroblast culture. Patient cells are obtained from skin biopsies and further grown in a dish to visualize their mitochondrial network.
Overview
The Mitochondrial Care Research Center is dedicated to translational research by providing a platform for clinicians, clinician investigators and basic researchers to collaboratively solve clinically relevant problems in mitochondrial biology, diagnosis and therapy.
With a team science approach, we hope to improve the lives of patients with hereditary and acquired mitochondrial diseases through the development of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Conditions we study in the framework of mitochondrial disease include dementia, neurodegeneration, cardiomyopathy, cancer, depression, diabetes and kidney disease, all with a future focus on preventive medicine.
With initiatives aligned by purpose and governance, the Mitochondrial Care Research Center is a multidisciplinary expert center that conducts research and provides patient care and education by offering innovative and integrated care at all three Mayo Clinic campuses in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota. Our work leverages Mayo Clinic's unique capacity and capabilities of physicians and scientists and provides access to diverse patient populations and biospecimens.
The Mitochondrial Care Research Center aligns Mayo Clinic's vast expertise to more rapidly understand the role of mitochondria in health and disease. Our goal is to create and accelerate innovative, patient-centered solutions and transform quality of life. Our translational approach brings together clinical and research experts dedicated to collaboration on all aspects of mitochondrial function.
