The Cardiovascular Research Center at Mayo Clinic is aggressively pursuing novel heart disease treatments. Advancing translational research

The Cardiovascular Research Center's unique entrepreneurship program encourages breakthrough therapies and diagnostic tests, driven by a compelling need to study the underlying causes of cardiovascular disease and to create new methods of prevention and treatment.

Overview

The Cardiovascular Research Center at Mayo Clinic focuses on advancing innovative therapeutics and novel diagnostics to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease.

The Cardiovascular Research Center comprises clinician-researchers and scientists from Mayo Clinic's campuses in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota.

The center's physician-scientists work collaboratively to rapidly translate basic scientific research into new tests and treatments, to provide access to clinical trials, and to facilitate care for patients with cardiovascular disease.

Goals and research

A major goal of the Cardiovascular Research Center is to enable translational research, which includes promoting entrepreneurship and commercialization. The center has a unique entrepreneurship program designed to create breakthrough therapies and diagnostic tests that contribute to its overall mission of reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease.

Motivating the faculty and staff of the Cardiovascular Research Center is the high global prevalence of cardiovascular disease, which remains the No. 1 cause of death worldwide. A compelling need to study the underlying causes of the many types of cardiovascular disease and to create new methods of prevention and treatment drives our mission.

The center supports discoveries from the laboratory all the way to approval of new drugs, devices and diagnostics. The Cardiovascular Research Center has eight cardiovascular research programs that translate scientific discoveries from the lab into leading-edge treatments and therapies for patients with cardiovascular disease.

The center also facilitates patient care and clinical trials for cardiovascular disease at Mayo Clinic.

Other initiatives

In addition to its research programs, the Cardiovascular Research Center engages in other initiatives that support research in cardiovascular disease, including:

  • A grants program aimed at increasing the number of established Mayo Clinic investigators engaged in cardiovascular research while also fostering the career development of young investigators
  • An entrepreneurship program with seminars, minisabbaticals and visiting lecturers that trains, links and supports new and newly engaged researchers who are pursuing entrepreneurial efforts
  • Administrative leaders who interact with institutional leadership to align the center's work with the Mayo Clinic mission

Clinical trials

Mayo Clinic is a leader in translating knowledge gained from cardiovascular research into better patient care. Thanks to discoveries within the Cardiovascular Research Center, Mayo Clinic patients have access to numerous clinical trials and studies for cardiovascular diseases led by Mayo Clinic scientists.

Patient care

Mayo Clinic's philosophy of patient care, which emphasizes developing medicine as a cooperative science between clinicians (physicians) and researchers, is integral to the Cardiovascular Research Center.

This approach enables physicians and researchers to form productive collaborations across cardiovascular programs and specialties, enabling collective knowledge to enhance the potential for breakthroughs in cardiovascular research and treatment.
