Emmy veterans return to race one more time: Cicely Tyson, Bette Midler, Meryl Streep …
At first glance, the Emmys are giving a lot of love to young performers including Zendaya (“Euphoria”), Julia Garner (“Ozark”), Sarah Snook (“Succession”), Jeremy Pope (“Hollywood) and Ramy Youssef (“Ramy”). But looks can be deceiving because there are several Emmy veterans in their 70s, 80s and even 90s nipping at these whippersnappers’ heels in the quest for the gold statute.

Cicely Tyson is the oldest acting Emmy nominee at 95. She’s nominated for the fifth time for guest role in a drama series as Ophelia Harkness on ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” and is also being inducted into the academy Hall of Fame. Tyson, a Tony (“A Trip to Bountiful”) and honorary Oscar-winner, has been nominated for the Emmy 16 times, winning three: for lead in a drama and actress of the year for CBS’ 1974 “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” and supporting actress in a miniseries or

Tom Hardy, Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger Were Perfect for ‘Mad Max’ Because of Their ‘Animal Magnetism,’ George Miller Says (Video)
What do Mel Gibson, Tom Hardy and the late Heath Ledger have in common, according to filmmaker George Miller? They all possess “animal magnetism,” which made them perfect for the lead role in “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

For the five-year anniversary of the film, Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast and virtual New York Comic Con event Metaverse teamed up to celebrate Miller’s iconic film that starred Hardy and Charlize Theron. Gibson starred in the first three “Mad Max” installations as the title character before Hardy took over in the 2015 film — but Miller has said that Ledger was always on his mind for the role before his death in 2008.

“Every time [Ledger would] come to Australia, he’d call in and we’d talk and I always had him in mind,” Miller said. “Mel, when I first met him, Heath, when I got to know him, and Tom all have

Babe 25th Anniversary Celebrated by James Cromwell: That'll Do Pig
The 1995 movie Babe is the definition of the 'little movie that could' trope. Based on a children's novel about the adventures of a talking piglet that becomes a talented sheep-herder, Babe was made on a small budget with a little-known cast, but went on to become an enduring classic with a global fan-following, $254 million box -office gross and seven Oscar nominations. On the film's 25th anniversary, actor James Cromwell, who played the role of Babe's owner Arthur Hoggett, spoke about the unique way in which the story's talking animals were brought to life.

"It was this film about a pig and the animals talked and I thought, you know, they're gonna put peanut butter in their mouths. I knew nothing about CGI and nothing about what [director] Chris Noonan and [co-writer and producer] George Miller wanted to achieve, which was to make the animals relate to each other as if they were human beings.

Hollywood Flashback: James Cromwell Reflects on 'Babe' 25 Years Later

Hollywood Flashback: James Cromwell Reflects on 'Babe' 25 Years Later
Like its title character, Babe, released a quarter-century ago, is the story of an underestimated little thing that went on to stupendous achievements.

It began as the 1983 Dick King-Smith children's book The Sheep-Pig, about an orphaned piglet who demonstrates a knack for herding sheep. In 1986, director George Miller (Mad Max) was on a flight from Sydney to London when a woman next to him laughed as she read the book. Miller immediately began negotiating with King-Smith for the rights — a process that took nearly a decade, with one sticking point being Miller's determination to shoot in his ...

Tom Pollock, Risk-Taking Ex-Universal Chairman, Dies at 77
Tom Pollock was not your ordinary studio chief. Trained as a lawyer, Pollock chaired Universal Pictures for nine years (1986 to 1996) and went on to partner with Ivan Reitman’s Montecito Picture Company, chair the Board of Trustees at the American Film Institute, and teach at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Pollock steered Universal through a rich and storied period, and took risks that many studio chiefs would not. He died of a heart attack on August 1.

At the studio, Pollock worked with many of the top directors in Hollywood: Steven Spielberg (“Jurassic Park”), Robert Zemeckis (the “Back to the Future” trilogy), Ron Howard, Ivan Reitman, Martin Scorsese, and George Miller (“Lorenzo’s Oil”).

During Pollock’s Universal tenure, the studio garnered seven Academy Award Best Picture nominations, including winner Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List,” Miller’s “Babe,” Howard’s “Apollo 13,” Phil Alden Robinson’s “Field of Dreams,” Oliver Stone’s

How George Miller’s ‘Babe’ Revolutionized the Talking Animal Movie 25 Years Ago

How George Miller’s ‘Babe’ Revolutionized the Talking Animal Movie 25 Years Ago
Babe” turns 25 on August 4, and the sweet, endearing family drama from Down Under, about an orphan pig winning a sheepherding competition, revolutionized the talking animal movie in 1995. The underdog also became a surprising box office hit and Oscar contender for Universal.

Babe” earned $64 million domestically and $254 million worldwide, and grabbed seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director (for Chris Noonan), Best Adapted Screenplay (Miller & Noonan), and Best Supporting Actor (for James Cromwell as avuncular Farmer Hoggett). Yet its lone prize was for Best Visual Effects, beating Universal’s heavily favored “Apollo 13.”

Thanks to the landmark collaboration between VFX studio Rhythm & Hues (overlaying CG animation over live-action animal footage), and more advanced animatronics from London-based Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, and Australia’s John Cox’s Creature Shop and Robotech, “Babe” altered the landscape of the industry. “We weren’t just changing technology, we were changing filmmaking,” said Oscar-winning

HBO Max Launches With All Eight ‘Harry Potter’ Movies
HBO Max has sweetened the elixir for “Harry Potter” fans: It launched Wednesday with all eight of Warner Bros.’s movies based on J.K. Rowling’s popular fantasy book series.

HBO Max’s film lineup — which will serve up more than 2,000 movies in the first year — includes all of the “Harry Potter” titles, which star Daniel Radcliffe as the titular wizard whiz-kid, Emma Watson as Hermione Granger, and Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley.

All Eight ‘Harry Potter’ Movies Join HBO Max Streaming Lineup

All Eight ‘Harry Potter’ Movies Join HBO Max Streaming Lineup
All eight Harry Potter movies are available for streaming on HBO Max, the WarnerMedia service that launched Wednesday in the U.S.

Released between 2001 and 2011, the films based on J.K. Rowling’s family-friendly series of books collectively grossed $7.7 billion for Warner Bros. Like other Warner titles, they had premium cable releases on HBO and in 2018 became available via the HBO Go and HBO Now streaming apps. (Go is for pay-tv subscribers to HBO and Now is a stand-alone version of HBO.) Digitally, they were available for rental and purchase but not via subscription streaming through a single outlet for non-hbo subscribers.

As was the case when Disney secured the Star Wars feature lineup for Disney+, WarnerMedia wanted to avoid any perception issue by herding all of the films into the HBO Max pen. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, a spinoff of the Potter films, will also be available on HBO Max.

Back to the Future Plot Hole Defended by Chris Pratt: Is It a Perfect Movie?
Chris Pratt stands behind Back to The Future being a perfect movie. Film fans on social media have been debating one particular perceived plot hole should exclude it, but Pratt believes he has a solution. Directors and actors are putting their top five perfect movies on social media and debating them with fans. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took his choices very seriously. For his criteria, Gunn believes that, "A perfect film is something that sings from start to finish with no obvious mistakes, whether they be aesthetic or structural. There are no logical lapses."

James Gunn made a few lists, but included Back to the Future on the second one. The director notes that the movie "seemingly could be imperfect (why don't Mom and Dad remember Marty?)" This is the plot hole that comes up a lot when the movie is brought up and social media is all over it.
