The PNAS News Office has regular business hours from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM US Eastern time, Monday through Friday and will attempt to respond to all queries and embargo-related issues in a timely manner during those hours.

PNAS Press Embargo

PNAS may distribute embargoed copies of an accepted article to the press prior to publication. Embargoes expire at 3:00 PM US Eastern time, Monday of the publication week. Authors may talk freely with the press about their work but should coordinate with the PNAS News Office so that reporters are aware of PNAS policy. If a version of your PNAS manuscript has ever been posted, in whole or in part, in any publicly accessible form, including on preprint servers, or if you plan on presenting your embargoed paper at a conference prior to publication, please note that different embargo policies may apply and you must contact the PNAS News Office immediately. PNAS publishes new content online daily at 3:00 PM US Eastern time. The press embargo has lifted on all articles published on the PNAS website.

Please note that PNAS allows authors to post versions of their manuscripts on preprint servers or institutional repositories prior to acceptance. Accordingly, PNAS may publish without embargo papers that have been previously posted online, and authors of such papers will be alerted of their publication date one week in advance.

Purpose

Distribution and use of advance materials from PNAS is controlled by the embargo policy listed above, which is designed to provide reporters an opportunity to write accurate news stories. Through implementation of our embargo policy, we work to maintain a fair and level playing field that gives no reporter or organization an advantage over others. Every week, PNAS sends out a "Tipsheet" alerting eligible members of the media to forthcoming articles that might be of interest. PNAS makes the full text of articles highlighted on the Tipsheet available to the media in advance of publication.

Eligibility

Staff journalists or freelancers writing for daily or weekly publication(s) and public information officers (PIOs) from research institutions are eligible to receive advance, embargoed material from PNAS. Writers of internal newsletters and suppliers of financial advice are not eligible. Eligible persons must agree to abide by the conditions of the PNAS embargo policy.

Conditions

Precise embargo dates accompany all advance materials (typically 3:00 PM US Eastern time the Monday of online publication week). Embargoed information must not be made public in any format, including print, television, radio, or via the Internet, before the embargo date.

Embargoed material is for background research only. Journalists may not redistribute the information within or outside their news organization, with the exception that journalists may share embargoed papers with experts in the field for the purpose of obtaining relevant commentary. Embargoed materials must be clearly labeled with the embargo date and time. Journalists are responsible for ensuring that all third parties honor the embargo date.

PIOs may not post, release, or distribute embargoed material in any publicly accessible manner before the embargo date. Embargoed press releases must be clearly labeled with the embargo date and time. PIOs are responsible for ensuring that all third parties honor the embargo date. Journalists must register with EurekAlert! and request access to PNAS to receive embargoed copies of articles.

Journalists and PIOs should credit "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" as the source of the information. Please note that the articles in PNAS report original research by independent authors and do not necessarily represent the views of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

Supporting materials provided by PNAS, such as graphics, audio, and video clips must be credited to the appropriate source. These materials may not be used to illustrate stories unrelated to the relevant PNAS article without express permission from PNAS. Failure to adhere to this policy will result in revocation of access to all embargoed material from PNAS.

PNAS sends out a weekly media Tipsheet via email, alerting reporters of forthcoming articles that might be of press interest. Full text of all articles are available in advance of publication through EurekAlert!.

The PNAS Tipsheet and table of contents are posted weekly to EurekAlert!, including articles that will publish online during the following week. Unless otherwise stated, PNAS applies a Monday 3:00 PM US Eastern time embargo to all articles, regardless of which day of the week the article actually publishes. For example, PNAS articles posted to EurekAlert! on Wednesday are under embargo until the following Monday at 3:00 PM US Eastern time. Articles identified on the weekly Tipsheet publish on Mondays, while other articles do not have a scheduled publication date and can publish online Monday through Friday.

Journalists may apply for access to embargoed material from PNAS through the EurekAlert! website.

By providing embargoed copies of articles to the media, PNAS helps authors broadly disseminate their findings. To allow time for accurate news coverage, when a paper is accepted for publication in PNAS, it is under embargo and not for public release before 3:00 PM US Eastern time, Monday of the publication week. Authors may talk freely with the press about their work but should coordinate with the PNAS News Office so that reporters are aware of the PNAS embargo policy.

If a version of your PNAS manuscript has ever been posted, in whole or in part, in any publicly accessible form, including on preprint servers, or if you plan on presenting your embargoed paper at a conference prior to publication, please note that different embargo policies may apply and you must contact the PNAS News Office immediately. Authors may discuss their work posted on preprints with reporters but should coordinate with the PNAS News Office and indicate to reporters that the preprint has not been peer reviewed. We ask that authors refrain from posting accepted manuscripts on publicly accessible preprint servers until after the PNAS embargo has expired.

PNAS welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with Public Information Officers (PIOs) from authors’ institutions. PIOs must register to access the page and will receive email notification when articles from their institution are scheduled for publication. The PNAS PIO page includes a list of author affiliations from recently accepted PNAS manuscripts that do not have a publication date set, and a list of author affiliations from articles scheduled for publication the following week.

Embargoed copies of articles scheduled for publication are available on the website. Please note that PIOs may not distribute embargoed articles directly to journalists. Journalists must register with EurekAlert! and request access to PNAS to receive embargoed copies of articles. The PIO resource page is updated every Wednesday.

PNAS notifies PIOs when articles from their institutions are determined to be of press interest, when the exact date of publication is known. PIOs who plan to promote an upcoming PNAS paper are asked to notify PNAS in advance.
