Austin Butler Channeled ‘Raging Bull’ For ‘Hannah Montana’ Guest Appearance
Austin Butler could have been a contender for Hannah Montana’s heart.

The “Elvis” Golden Globe winner reflected on the intensity he would bring to Disney and Nickelodeon roles, most famously as a suitor for Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus) in the eponymous hit TV series. Butler starred in two episodes of “Hannah Montana,” with his second appearance playing Derek Hanson, Hannah’s blind date in Season 2 Episode 7, titled “My Best Friend’s Boyfriend.”

He additionally had roles in “iCarly” and “Zoey 101,” both of which landed modern-day revival series.

“I look back on the Nickelodeon and Disney shows that I did; even though my skill wasn’t there, I still wanted to give the energy [as if] I was going to make ‘Raging Bull,'” Butler told Backstage magazine. “I kept that fierce dedication toward trying to find more truth, even in things where it could be easier to just phone it in.

Steven Spielberg hoped HBO would have tapped him to helm “Mare of Easttown.”

The Academy Award-winning director revealed that he is looking to direct a limited series and make his TV debut behind the camera with a series like acclaimed Emmy winner “Mare of Easttown.”

Can the Erotic Thriller Ever Be Revived?

Can the Erotic Thriller Ever Be Revived?
The erotic thriller: A slice of escapist entertainment that was once as lucrative as it was steamy. Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the genre was firing on all box office cylinders and producing big hits left and right. However, by the mid-1990s, the erotic thriller lost a lot of its financial luster and vanished from the mainstream cinema scene.

Actor Julian Sands Reported Missing While Hiking in San Gabriel Mountains
Julian Sands, a British actor best known for his roles in films like the 1985 drama “A Room With a View” and the 1989 horror entry “Warlock,” was reported missing at about 7:30 p.m. last Friday, Jan. 13. Sands had been hiking in the Baldy Bowl hiking area, approximately 50 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

According to a representative for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, ground crews responded and began searching the area soon after the 65-year-old Sands was reported missing. However, parties had to be pulled Saturday evening, after roughly 24 hours of searching, due to avalanche risks and trail conditions.

Sands is known to be an enthusiastic mountaineer. “I love climbing mountains, I’ve spent a lot of time in the Alps over the years, a lot of time in the Andes, Alaska and the American ranges,” Sands told ThriveGlobal in 2020.

Authorities have continued with intermittent searches by helicopter and drone.

The Cartoon Connection To Skinamarink

The Cartoon Connection To Skinamarink
Kyle Edward Ball's "Skinamarink" is a singular horror movie experience that /Film heralds as an early contender for the scariest movie of 2023. The abstract story follows two young children, Kevin and Kaylee, tiptoeing around their house at night. As they search for their parents, they discover the doors and windows have mysteriously gone missing.

"Experience" is the appropriate word for watching this film that strips all narrative and visual traditions. Ball rarely focuses on the children's faces and only part of their bodies, instead angling his camera on walls, doors, and other parts of the home. Dialogue is difficult to hear and is only occasionally understood through subtitles. Jamie McRae's scratched and grainy cinematography adds a lo-fi aesthetic that reflects the 1990s setting. The darkened surroundings are indistinguishable, with only the flicker of the television or a hallway night light shining through.

Public domain cartoons from the 1930s play on VHS throughout "Skinamarink,

Aubrey Plaza Was Proud There Are No Guns in ‘Emily the Criminal’

Aubrey Plaza Was Proud There Are No Guns in ‘Emily the Criminal’
Aubrey Plaza is glad that Emily the Criminal was also not Emily the Gunslinger.

The “Emily the Criminal” star revealed that her favorite “really cool, kind of weird thing about the film” is that her titular character, despite committing crimes, does not use guns.

“I was kind of proud of that, because I don’t think you need guns,” Plaza said during “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” earlier this week. “Most thrillers introduce guns, like, immediately…We don’t need guns in every movie.”

The “The White Lotus” Season 2 star continued, “I don’t think it’s like – it’s an unconscious thing, I think, for the audience to watch that movie and not even realize, like, ‘Oh, there’s no guns.’ But I think it actually makes it more, kind of, anxiety-inducing, because you’re like, ‘How is she going to take these guys down without a weapon like that?

Missing's Influences Included Gone Girl, Into The Spider-Verse, And Succession [Exclusive]
2018's "Searching" was not the first desktop film to grace cinemas, but it was arguably the most innovative. Directed by Aneesh Chaganty, the film fully realized the new role of modern technology and the internet within modern mystery narratives, and it also stumbled upon unique ways to characterize and tap into the internality of its characters through their screen usage and interactions with their phones and laptops.

Nearly five years later, a spiritual successor to "Searching" arrives in the form of Nick Johnson and Will Merrick's "Missing," another thrilling continuation of the screen life subgenre with even more tricks up its sleeve. Featuring strong performances from Storm Reid and Nia Long, "Missing" will not only scratch the itch for a twisty, suspenseful mystery, but will also present it in a way that is wholly fresh, original, and evocative of the digital age.

/Film's Ben Pearson spoke with the filmmakers behind the new "Searching" successor,

Kids vs. Aliens Review: Charming B-Movie Gorefest

Kids vs. Aliens Review: Charming B-Movie Gorefest
In 2013, Jason Eisener directed a short horror movie from a script he wrote with John Davies for Shudder’s V/H/S/2, the beloved horror found footage anthology. The short film, "Slumber Party Alien Abduction," tells the story of a group of kids and teenagers left home alone right before an alien invasion and who must join forces to fight for their lives. Now, the creative duo is back to repeat their roles in Kids vs. Aliens, a horror comedy that works as the second spinoff of the V/H/S franchise, expanding on the wacky concept and bringing their work to theaters. Unfortunately, the plot gets stretched too thin to push Kids vs. Aliens beyond a feature runtime. Still, the movie rewards horror fiends who decide to stick until the end with a sloppy but gloriously campy gorefest.

Eugene Levy's Schitt's Creek Character Was Closer To His Real Self Than Any Other Character

Eugene Levy's Schitt's Creek Character Was Closer To His Real Self Than Any Other Character
Eugene Levy has been known to play well-meaning, offbeat, and often flustered supporting characters throughout his career. Whether he's a featured player or part of the ensemble, the veteran Canadian actor has stolen scenes left and right with his impeccable timing, earnest delivery, and trademark eyebrows. But following his stint on the fan-favorite series "Schitt's Creek," it seems like the theme of this era for him is stepping out of his comfort zone, which is also a huge aspect of his new show, "The Reluctant Traveller."

As part of the Television Critics Association Winter press tour, Levy appeared on a panel attended by /Film's Vanessa Armstrong to promote the upcoming Apple TV+ travel show. The eight-episode series will take the award-winning actor around the world to experience once-in-a-lifetime adventures with new friends, gorgeous scenery, and mouth-watering food, despite the fact that he normally wouldn't do any of these things if left to his own devices.

From ‘The Inspection’ to ‘Tár,’ This Season’s Directors Take Aim at Institutional Power

From ‘The Inspection’ to ‘Tár,’ This Season’s Directors Take Aim at Institutional Power
Power and privilege are often parts of the same formula — one almost inevitably leads to the other. The films of this award season examine the phenomenon in myriad ways: from factual to fictional, and within institutions as disparate as the military and the classical music community. The directors behind “The Inspection,” “Devotion,” “The Woman King” and “Tár” explored these dynamics both thematically and visually while shepherding their characters through four very different but equally powerful stories.

For “The Inspection,” director Elegance Bratton, whose film is based on his life experience, joining the Marines gave him a purpose and place that otherwise never existed for him.

“People assume that I named myself,” says Bratton, though he didn’t. He recognizes that it evokes assumptions even before anyone lays eyes on him, but intersectionality doesn’t bequeath a gay, Black man much. “[This is] my experience as a person who’s born on the outskirts of privilege.
