I am requesting this right to be able to fastly revert any vandalism or anything disruptive, and especially on wikipedia. I am still relatively new here and I wonder if I can have this right. I have made about 400 edits in total at all WikiMedia wikis, and 350 on Wikipedia. I am also active on Commons and Meta.ThesenatorO5-2 (talk) 09:27, 16 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello everyone! I'd like to apply for GR. I'm administrator of Wikidata, and my global field of work is mostly removing spam connected to Commons and Wikidata. Unfortunately, I'm often stopped by CAPTCHA and AbuseFilter; I remember, once I even had to ask someone else to mark a page for deletion because I couldn't add the template myself. I was advised in the past to apply till I'm willing to continue what I do, so here I am. The right would be very useful for me in general, especially when my edits get undid by spammers. I've read the guidelines and am happy to serve if you find me appropriate. Thanks for reading! Bencemac (talk) 16:57, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You can always improve yourself, and I believe I did that. Working with others also needs the others' cooperation, but some people just want to see the devil in me, no matter what I try or do, so I don't think that this lack is just my fault all the time. I believe that you, who see me in the field, can judge me and decide if these concerns are truly real or not. I'm surely have the intention to work with others, otherwise I wouldn't be here. I hope I answered your question. Regards, Bencemac (talk) 17:53, 15 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Global sysop for Operator873

Greetings and salutations. I'm requesting the global sysop toolkit in order further expand my efforts against global spam, LTAs, and, occasionally, low level vandalism. I have found a lot of pleasure in seeking out hidden spam links and combating spambot activities. The bulk of my xwiki activity is related to this end and therefore does not reflect actual edits as evidenced by my frequent requests on SR/G. However, with the global sysop tool set, I'd be able to take more direct action on the items I find. I'm currently a Sysop and CheckUser on the Simple English Wikipedia and the writer/owner of GlobalSysBot (the Global Sysop Bot). Thank you for your kind consideration. Hi all--I am here for one reason: to have the ability to roll back the ongoing harassment by User:WhenDatHotlineBling (who may, on occasion, be impersonated by My Royal Young...) and block their socks. Hotline has a habit of pinging, emailing, and doxxing me and a few others on various Wikiprojects, including WikiQuote, and sometimes it takes a while for that stuff to be removed, the user blocked, and then the edits revdeleted/suppressed. Those of you who have helped me in the past with it: thank you very much. You know how disgusting it is, and it's made even more painful by the fact that he's been publicizing my home address for years and never had the decency to send me a Christmas card. I'm not going to list the now-mostly suppressed edits, hundreds if not thousands of them; the history of this is indicative, I think.

Anyway, I would like to have global rights so I can do at least a bit of damage control; please note also that usually those harassing posts involve other favorite targets, including Praxidicae and User:Flyer22. I will add that I have no intention of being much more active globally, and that I have no global ambition: this is for limited use.

I've been identified to the Foundation, I have two-factor authentication, I just had my tetanus shot, and I am not under any current sanctions anywhere. When Hotline is taken care of, I will gladly give back my tool. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 21:50, 12 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Support Support trusted user. Valid need. Not on IRC so flagging down a steward is annoying and basically requires using CU-l, so this is easier. Right can’t really do much on wikis with established communities so sure. TonyBallioni (talk) 22:06, 12 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Support Support -- Несмир Кудилович (разговор) 22:09, 12 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Global rollback would probably be a better group if your intent is to revert the vandalism. The global sysop group isn't active on all wikis; see Special:WikiSets/7 for a list of wikis where GS do not have access. Global rollback is, in contrast, a truly global group. – Ajraddatz (talk) 22:20, 12 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Ajraddatz, you've seen this vandal: they need immediate blocking, not rolling back, and revdeleting. I thought about asking for rollback but realized it serves no purpose, and only eggs them on. Drmies (talk) 15:12, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • They need immediate locking (and checking and global blocking of any underling IPs or ranges), given the cross-wiki nature of their abuse. I have no issues trusting you with this access, I just don't think it'll be sufficient for dealing with the problem. – Ajraddatz (talk) 18:59, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • There is little global activity (especially GS wikis). Trusted user, but should not be given the GS flag. GS is not about solving a single problem. Even if it's temporary. --mirinano (talk) 06:18, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Drmies While I fully support you in this request, GS doesn't include global rollback and it sounds like that's what you're going for? Praxidicae (talk) 11:11, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Neutral Neutral. User is trusted, it can be observed by the permissions he has on en.wikipedia. Regardless of that, I cannot support you for GS, with such little global activity. If you want to fight vandalism, why won't you apply for the Global Rollback first? I look forward to your candidacy for GS in the future. Cheers! Nadzik (talk) 13:21, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Thanks--but given the nature of the harassment, rollback alone won't do as long as they're not blocked. And because they always ping me (and others, none of whom are stewards), I'm often the first one to know. Drmies (talk) 15:10, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • @Drmies: I understand. Please do not take it personally, I just think that Global sysop should be given to the user that are experienced, trusted, and have shown cross-wiki work. You are surely experienced and trusted, that is why I am not opposing your request. Cheers! Nadzik (talk) 17:09, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I'm in support of this request, but global rollback is likely better. Most of the wikis that WDHB vandalizes on, as far as I've seen, are not GS projects. Vermont (talk) 17:15, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Symbol oppose vote oversat.svg Strong oppose It's not personally, but you should only have global rights if you use them. The GS policy requires cross wiki work that you do not have and do not want. The purpose of GS is to do all cross wiki work and not just hunt a single troll --𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 17:38, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Symbol oppose vote oversat.svg Strong oppose Sorry I can't see a lot of cross-wiki work. It's too early to be a global sysop now. Other global sysops and stewards can help you with your problems as much as possible. --Uncitoyentalk 17:49, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Neutral Neutral. I don't like to oppose here. You do good work on the English Wikipedia. But for global sysop people are expected to have crosswik activity. I can't really see that yet. I also have to agree with WikiBayers point. If you were to get more crosswiki activity I might even consider supporting you at a later request. --Wiki13 talk 17:59, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • BA candidate.svg Weak oppose Usually more permissive, the candidate's motivation text seems biased: he gives an example where a GS has no place, enWQ. Also, the crosswiki contributions are not huge. —Eihel (talk) 18:15, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • BA candidate.svg Regretfully oppose. Trusted user, but has a limited cross-wiki experience. Global sysop toolkit wouldn't be useful on projects like the one they mentioned. I could support a request for global rollback instead. Sgd. —Hasley 18:48, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Support Support If the user weren't trusted and experienced, I would probably oppose him, given the reason he wants the flag. While it is true that GS are expected to have a strong record of xwiki work, I think this particular case deserves an exemption. He would be doing anti-harrassment work, which involves many things. Esteban16 (talk) 18:50, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Oppose Oppose this use case doesn't seem to support this request; if you need to rollback changes on many projects, global rollbacker is better - if someone is being a cross-wiki vandalism only account, chasing them around on small projects with the block tool isn't ideal either, refer to a steward for a gobal lock; further, posting of private personal information on various projects (who I'm assuming don't have oversight teams such as enwikiquote) should get cleaned up by suppression, which is also going to require a steward to engage. As far as the example of enwikiquote goes, that project has both more than 10 admins, and more than 3 that have logged actions in the last two months, so global sysops shouldn't even be operating there. — xaosflux Talk 19:05, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Xaosflux, if you don't approve this, I think there's little hope of this succeeding. Please do us all a favor and just close the request. I'll just do what I've been doing--reporting to the stewards and/or pinging someone I know. Here's one thing that I wish would happen: that those who do place a block won't be negligent or hesitant in suppressing, because sometimes I have to ask for that separately. Thanks. Drmies (talk) 20:39, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • Unfortunately the people doing the blocking are often not the ones with the ability to suppress the content. The community has decided that all of the local user groups need to feel important, so we don't allow stewards to clean up messes on large wikis (well, we let them arbitrarily do some things - rollbacking is fine, deleting and suppressing not). They would need to request that local users do the suppressing on wikis with local oversighters. – Ajraddatz (talk) 21:14, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • @Drmies: it's nothing against you specifically, but mostly this just isn't the right tool to deal with this problem (especially with current policies for individual project governance as mentioned by Ajraddatz). I'm not sure what the "best" solution is for reactive cleanups if it is across multiple sized projects. (Trust and Safety "leads the Anti-Harassment Program" - but you've seen what happens when they try to act in a way a community doesn't like......). — xaosflux Talk 23:12, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
        • User:Xaosflux, I don't know either. What I do know is that a lack of proper governance shouldn't stand in the way of blocking people like this and quickly reverting their edits (suppression is always last on the list, I know--but just rolling back is useless when the LTA is simply sitting right there reverting). I will say this: Trust and Safety is not the slowest of agencies. Local law enforcement is top of the list, the FBI is somewhere in the middle--yes, Ajraddatz, that is where this is at. On EN-Wikipedia, we talk about IAR when extraordinarily events sometimes call for extraordinary measures; I would have thought that blocking would be as "fine" as rolling back. Ajraddatz, after two or more years of this shit (I'm sure you've seen some of it, and if you haven't, well, my daughter is sad at you--those who know, know) I really don't care very much anymore about what authority is granted to which group of whatever. The very fact that all of a sudden I (and all those other users) can be reached, and harassed, and doxxed, on a dozen different fucking projects where none of us did anything, that should be reason enough for someone to get serious about this. And here we are, discussing the semantics and going "oh ho-ho, this user hasn't done enough in the different wikis"--well, to all those who said that, you probably haven't been fucking doxxed over a dozen wikis, and I'm not even sure you have as many contributions globally as I do. So please someone close this shit-show, because I am getting really frustrated by the lack of support. It's pretty sad if the WMF is more understanding than individual human beings. Xaosflux, Ajraddatz, I'm not really directing this at you. It's the others, who get all formal with their "strong oppose" (there is no such fucking thing), that I'm pissed at. I wish that whoever invented this project-wide unified log-in ... well, I'll stop. Xaosflux, please close this and archive this. Thanks. Drmies (talk) 00:39, 14 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
          • You're right to be upset. For years I've been arguing that we need to do better at coordinating our response to cross-wiki abuse and harassment, but it has repeatedly been dismissed as against the principle of local project governance or other meaningless technicalities. Here is a user group that I proposed in 2012 that would, had it been accepted, allow you to at least lock the global account and revert the edits without the edits being immediately reverted back by the troll. But that particular proposal didn't pass because people thought that anyone who wants that access should just become a steward (through once-a-year elections, granting them all sorts of other unrelated tools that they may or may not want to use) and the details of elections and confirmations would be too complicated. And there have been others, like a current proposal that would allow stewards to get more centralized CheckUser data to aid in fighting cross-wiki abuse. The proposal is facing significant opposition because of various "problems" like stewards not being elected to view that information, the fact that it would allow stewards to get information otherwise only available to big wiki CUs, or the incredible risks associated with granting stewards access to more non-public information. It's all nonsense from people who have absolutely no perspective of how these websites fit into the real world. I think the only hope is that the WMF continues to take more and more responsibility in this area, because I don't see the stubborn community ever shifting on this. – Ajraddatz (talk) 01:35, 14 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Sigh, I’m going to weigh in here again and point out that global sysop does not actually do all that much and it’s arguably the least significant global right because it’s scope is so restricted. Come to think of it, the only permission that I think should be given more freely is pending changes reviewer on en.wiki. It’s the ability to block and delete on projects that have no existing community. That’s not really that big a deal. I know that there’s a lot of pride felt by people who work doing countervandal work on small wikis, but this permission is significantly less powerful than global rollback in that global rollback is actually global.

Okay, Drmies screwed up and said that he wanted to use it on a non-GS wiki, and he didn’t know rollback isn’t bundled: who can blame him. It’s bundled with sysop everywhere else.

Here’s the thing: this vandal is extremely bad and will start targeting him elsewhere. This is a valid use case of another human being having his life and his family’s life threatened. Letting him shut it down quickly should just be common sense. So yes, I’m going to ping Uncitoyen, Wiki13, Hasley, Eihel, and WikiBayer I’d strongly encourage you to revisit the votes here. Is a merit badge for cross-wikiness really worth maintaining as a trophy, when it’s something that actually impacts someone’s life. And yes, xaos and ajr, Drmies could have explained what he wanted better, but there’s a fairly clear use case here, especially when it expands to other projects. Anyone who knows the background here will tell you it’s going to expand before it stops. TonyBallioni (talk) 01:29, 14 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

In the past year exactly none of the wikis he has been targetted on are in the GS wikiset. It's not an issue of trust, it's a simple practical problem that this right wouldn't let him use any new access anywhere that he needs it. And it's incredibly rich to hear you talk about using common sense to fight cross-wiki harassment when you oppose any other effort to give stewards or other users active in fighting cross-wiki abuse the tools to do their job properly. – Ajraddatz (talk) 01:35, 14 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I know what kind of stuff Drmies is talking about, as unfortunately I've been one of few people that spots this LTA very quickly. As soon as I see this I request help of a steward immediately to make sure the content is oversighted as soon as possible. Almost in all cases when this has happened recently action was taken in minutes. And as far my reasoning is concerned... I know what the scope is on global sysop (I'v been one in the past) and that it's limited. Its only scoped to most small wikis and thats why I think anyone getting this global right should have experience in dealing with the vandalism, spam and abuse which happen on small wikis. In the end GS won't solve the problem he's having with this LTA. In my experience asking for a steward to help in #wikimedia-stewardsconnect is the fastest way to deal with this LTA when he comes around. --Wiki13 talk 06:09, 14 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have made at least fifty accounts in the past couple of months and probably 6,000 vandal edits on Commons. Yet nobody wants to throttle the ability of a newbie or an IP to do so much damage. Requests for global rename permissions

Global rename for Nadzik

The following request is closed Please do not modify it. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Not ending before 8 July 2020 11:51 UTC

Hi! I would like to request global renamer permissions. I am an active editor on pl.wikipedia and Wikidata. Recently I've started editing af.wikipedia and joined Small Wiki Monitoring Team. I've read and learned the Global rename policy, I've also read the past requests (both accepted and rejected), in order to familiarize myself with the type of job I would be responsible for. For the moment there is only one polish speaking Global renamer and due to her duties, she has not been active in the last few months. Due to a large number of GLAM accounts on pl.wiki I would also be able to help them locally, as they are usually not experienced users and the thought of META is usually overwhelming for them. I could handle the rename requests as the summer just started and I've got some more free time. I will resign these permissions when they are no longer needed or when I won't be able to use them actively. I hope that my intentions are clear, I would be happy to answer any questions if necessary. Cheers! Nadzik (talk) 11:51, 24 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    • Hi @1997kB:, nice to see you in yet another place! I haven't had a pleasure to help any accounts just yet. Plwiki is in a interesting situation, as there used to be a page where one would contact local bureaucrats, but it hasn't been in use since 2014. It depends on a workload, but if it was necessary, I guess we could think about bringing it back to life (like enwiki page dedicated to that). Right now accounts are mostly reported to Administrators' Noticeboard and are warned with this template. Recently we had a big discussion on plwiki about the names of the accounts that are created (some of them use names of the GLAM institutions that they represent, which is against our policy), which sparked after the official account of the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland was blocked for not following our policy. Cheers! Nadzik (talk) 11:06, 4 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Neutral Neutral Although there's no red flags, but I also don't see anything in favour despite the need of linguistic diversity in our team. I usually look for some experience in renaming related areas or sysop so that they can use rename with those rename blocks—both of which are absent here. Also on the one side you referenced that big discussion but you didn't even participated in it, which to me is not satisfying. BTW thanks for the answer to question though! ‐‐1997kB (talk) 14:58, 5 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello. My main wiki is Turkish Wikipedia. I worked as an administrator on most Turkish wiki projects. I have been an OTRS volunteer for 5 years. I've blocked many inappropriate usernames in my own wiki since years. Sometimes there are requests to change names on Turkish OTRS. I naturally explain these e-mails in detail and direct them to global renamers. But when I check these users later, I see that many of them couldn't request a name change. Because most of them don't speak English, they admit that they didn't fulfill these requests correctly. I have read the global policy several times. I think this permission will be easy for users who have problems in Turkish wikis. Thanks. Also: My statistics on this Turkish Wikipedia.--Uncitoyentalk 13:17, 16 July 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Abuse filter helper for Stanglavine

The following request is closed Please do not modify it. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

I have identified, blocked and reported spam activities as a GS. I have done this mainly through SWViwer and through individual lists of "wikis to monitor" that I create myself. However, I would like to have access of global abuse filters logs (many are private, for obvious reasons) as they would help to centralize my work. I am specifically interested in abusefilter-log-private permission and I intend to use them only in global filters (46, 76, 233, 250, 251, others that may be useful 72, 100, 101, 132, 169, 190, 234) mainly to track spambots. I think global abuse filters logs of this private filters can be of great help, and to access them I need to be a meta sysop or abuse filter helper, so I make this request. I have no intention of using this permission for anything other than global filters. Thanks for consideration, and open for questions. --Rafael (stanglavine) msg 19:31, 27 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Global interface admin rights for User:Jayprakash12345

The following request is closed Please do not modify it. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Not ending before 08:09, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

I would like to nominate myself for the global interface admin rights. I am a voluntary lead developer of Indic-TechCom, a regional technical group. I joined Wikipedia in 2015. and start contributing to Wikimedia's technical space in 2017. I am also a Wikimedia's Google summer of code 2019 Intern, MediaWiki extensions developer, MediaWiki trainer, Editor having 19,000+ edits, Technical Officer in Heritage GLAM. I created 10+ UserScripts, 10 Toolsforge tools. I was a Technical resource person/Organizer of 7 MediaWiki/Technical programs. My 512 patches out 556 have been merged at Gerrit Wikimedia. So there is two motivations for applying. First, there are lack of skilled interface admins in Indic languages (excluding Hindi). Due to this, Indic wikis don't maintenance the gadgets actively. Second as a team, We are getting requests regarding gadget fixes. I took 5 times to interface admin rights to the local wiki. See Indic-TechCom/Management#User_rights_Details. I also guided to the local admins/users How to fix things. Example are

These are only examples. I guide actively on email a lot. Teaching "How to fix the issue" to the non-technical person is less productive and may rise the breaking of the site. So now it times to take responsibility. I have created mw:MediaWiki:Gadget-tabbedwindow.js like gadgets for MediaWiki.org Dev community. and ran Writing user scripts & gadgets workshops. So it demonstrates the capabilities that I have at least intermediate knowledge of scripts. This user rights will overcome above both issue. Thank you--Jayprakash >>> Talk 08:09, 28 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Strong support Strong support At several times in the past Jay had received temporary interface-admin rights on Indic wikis - in several cases where there are no interface admins on those wikis. When community needs a fix quickly, it is delayed due to nomination process on local wiki, and then a wait for 7-14 days, before temporary rights are given. This cycle repeats again after a few weeks, where something else has to be fixed. As Jay had been consistently working to resolve tech issues on Indic Wiki and largely the sole player in the area, having these rights will help him save a lot of time. KCVelaga (talk) 10:39, 28 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Question Question: From my understanding, it seems this reequest is aimed at the wikis related to the Indic Tech-com. Is that right? Wouldn't requesting interface adminship at a few individual wikis do a better job? Thanks for your answer, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 10:42, 28 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi Martin Urbanec, Yes, This request is aimed for wikis related to Indic languages. I requested rights on individual wikis for a week in the past. But every time I had to wait for a week then request on meta page. It took an average of 10 days. And frankly speaking, I spent most of the time in traveling. So I don't know what will be my situation after 10 days later. There are 24 Indic Languages and these languages have projects such as Wikipedia, Wikibooks, and Wikisource etc. I think there is no sense to nominate on 50+ wikis?--Jayprakash >>> Talk 11:23, 28 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Support Support I usually don't comment on such requests, however lack of interface admins is a recurring problem when something has changed in MediaWiki's CSS handling, and sometimes people find it easier to file tickets in Phabricator to ask for help (which is the wrong place for on-wiki content support) instead of trying to find out how to find and contact global interface admins. Here are three examples from the last two weeks from Indic wikis. I can see Jayprakash as a great point of contact and help, not only for fixing such problems but as he is also a trusted contributor and willing to actively share his technical knowledge with others so they can fix these problems on their wikis in the future. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 12:06, 28 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Support Support Per Jayprakash's explanation and Andre's vouche, I support this request. It indeed doesn't make sense requesting the right at 20+ language versions. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 12:11, 28 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Strong support Strong support Jay Prakash is one the most skilful and experienced people in the technical work in South Asian Region. Without his consistent support for supporting with the MediaWiki patches, fixing bugs, and creating wonderful tools such as Stats calculator for Wikisource project, BookReader tool that allows readers to read books on Wikisource in a format similar to the Internet Archive, Activeuser, OCR Tool that automatically OCR the page with one click without hassle of running the OCR on entire book from Linux which is technical and Commmon editors cannot use well, very innovative Wikisource Contest tool, and he is currently working on building self sustainable tool for Wikipedia contests that would be very supportive for communities to calculate stats which are currently done with Fountain tool or dashboard. Without his support, Wikisource communities would not be able to function the way they do. Last year, there were some technical issues in Indic Wikisource projects due to which the entire project site were not picking up images of the books for proofreading, which created problems for editors who could not proofread for a month or so. Jay Prakash stepped in to work on the JS script and helped the 15+ Wikisource projects to remove those issues. This may sound like a long story in endorsement but his VOLUNTEER efforts are incomparable and he is someone who has kind and open demeanor and he always is supporting different projects/programs in the backdrop to ensure the technical side of the work runs smoothly.
