Latest Update

Your money

A round up of all the latest energy, telecoms and money news to keep you informed and on top of your finances.

WFH trend drives up home broadband data use

30 November 2022: On average Irish households are now using 14GB per day, compared to 8.1GB per day in 2019, and 7% of broadband customers are using a whopping 1TB of data per month, up from 2.7% in 2019 according to Pure Telecom.

This growth reflects the global trend, which shows that data volumes are twice what they were in 2019 and are expected to double again by 2025. The increase is thought to be due to the rise in remote working, alongside more time spent streaming TV and gaming.

AIB, EBS and Haven push up mortgage rates by 0.5%

28 November 2022: AIB and sister mortgage firms EBS and Haven have hiked rates on new fixed-interest mortgages by 0.5%, the second increase for AIB since October. The changes took effect on 25 November, but those who draw down their mortgage before 16 January can still avail of their agreed rate.

Existing fixed-rate and variable-rate borrowers won’t be affected by the rise, but those on deals that are ending soon and first-time buyers will feel the impact of the rise.

Bank of Ireland hikes rates by 0.25%

10 November 2022: Bank of Ireland has become the second main bank to increase their fixed rate mortgages. The 0.25% rise will apply immediately to all new customers, and could mean up to €40 extra per month for those borrowing €300,000.

First €200 energy credit rolls out to households

1 November 2022: The latest Government Electricity Credit, totalling €600, will be paid in three instalments of €200, with the first landing in customer accounts during November 2022.

Electricity customers can expect further credits in January and March 2023 to help with electricity bills.
