Our Programme
Better Work, together with the ILO Sri Lanka office, is conducting an intervention in Sri Lanka in close collaboration with the national constituents and other relevant actors in the garment industry. The garment industry has, since the 1980s, been the largest exporter in Sri Lanka’s economy and employs a majority of women workers. Better Work will support the national partners representing the government, employers and workers’ organizations in Sri Lanka to promote international labour standards, more effective partnerships and sound industrial relations.
Better Work Sri Lanka will focus its interventions on:
- Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)
- Gender, Diversity and Inclusion
- Small and Medium Enterprise support and development
Better Work’s presence in Sri Lanka began with its Academy initiative. This work involved engaging one of the country’s largest denim manufacturing groups (Orit Apparels Lanka) and its partner company, global brand Levi Strauss, on improving workplace cooperation and worker-manager dialogue.
The present intervention phase will run through June 2023. Better Work will not be offering the traditional factory service package in Sri Lanka.
Better Work Sri Lanka is made possible by the developmental partnership of the European Union with support from the Dutch Ministry of Finance.
