I first came across fashion influencer Ruth Walsh, otherwise known as @ruthyruby, on Instagram. Walsh has an eclectic yet refined style. Her romantic Instagram feed is perfect for those in need of outfit inspiration as well as travel content. Morals and postcodes are the 28-year-old’s biggest fashion influences. She grew up in Cork before moving to New York and then Amsterdam. “I love moving to different places, immersing myself in different cultures. Once I feel inspired, I feel so empowered.”

The women sewing their way to a better life: ‘I knew nothing about fashion and couldn’t even sew on a button the first day I came in here’

Like a concert pianist, Mariam Dudashvili takes a deep breath, fans her fingers out in front and presses her foot on the pedal below. But instead of the classical music she learned as a child in her homeland of Georgia, it’s a repetitive sound that fills the room as she skilfully feeds the fabric in under the fast-moving steel needle of her Juki industrial sewing machine. “I love that whirring sound,” Dudashvili tells me with an infectious smile, as she finishes off yet another apron in the We Make Good textiles studio on Dublin’s Mountjoy Square.

Style notes: Limerick designs turn heads at Paris Fashion Week, and an iconic Dior exhibition

The Bar Hemingway at the Ritz was buzzing with Paris Fashion Week glamazons when Limerick designer Aoife McNamara arrived in fresh from her catwalk showcase at the hotel and instantly turned heads. All eyes darted to the blonde girl wearing the gleaming white silk dress with square neck and delicate pink velvet straps, and as she turned, they glimpsed the oversized bow and tie in a glistening tweed with flecks of metallic threads.

If you are a flapper at heart and a fan of clothes from the 1920s and 1930s, then you are in for a real treat. An Art Deco fashion exhibition, Anything Goes! Fashions of the 1920s, opens in the Ulster Museum in Belfast on October 7 with 20 outfits from the museum’s fashion collection on display, as well as shoes and accessories like cloche hats and T-bar shoes.

Fast-fashion fallout: ‘I was being led by trends and had a wardrobe of really low-quality clothes that made me feel like I had nothing to wear’

As a society, we are becoming increasingly aware of the harmful effects of fast fashion on our planet. While we get bombarded daily with social media ads and discount codes, our craving for a good deal is waning. The way we shop is changing, and for good reason. According to the UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion, the fashion industry was responsible for 8-10pc of global carbon emissions in 2019. This is more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined in that year.

What to wear to a festival when you’re not in your twenties

The question of what to wear to a festival — much like Halloween, nights out or daily life — hits differently when you’re no longer 22. Thanks to Alexa Chung, Kate Moss and Sienna Miller, music festivals (aka parties across 600 acres of divots) have grown synonymous with aggressively fashion-forward choices, ranging from the revealing to the unconventional, which doesn’t necessarily sit well with those of us who feel uncomfortable with glitter.
