I struggled with including this one. Why? Because it requires a covetable level of “liathróidí” to sport — and it’s actually kind of cool. While similar to the bog-standard undercut of the early 1990s, this style — named after a US DJ — involves shaving one side of your head from the temple often around to the nape of the neck, while leaving the rest of your tresses flowing. It’s been repeatedly rocked by Cara Delevingne over the last few years... possibly because it’s a nightmare to grow out.

I have always considered myself to be a person with a keen eye for trends. I’m not a slave to them, but I know what the kids are wearing and why, and up until now I have always managed to integrate trends I liked into my personal style. That’s all changed now. It’s changed because of Y2K. This trend, based around the trends of the year 2000, as the name suggests, is just not for me. I simply can’t. I can’t, because I’ve done it before. I guess I’m officially old.

You know the old ‘I can’t go, I’m washing my hair’ shtick? I have a friend for whom that excuse is valid. Every week, on the same evening, she washes and dries her hair. It takes two hours. TWO HOURS. Her hair is very thick, and she takes her time, resulting in a professional-looking blow-dry, but still, I have been aghast at the time it takes her since we met a decade ago. Not because I’m judging her, or I don’t think it’s a good use of her time (her time is her time after all), but because I simply wouldn’t have the patience.

Louise McSharry: Don’t fret over frazzled hair, the damage can be undone

I was watching The Real Housewives of Dallas the other night when I audibly gasped and had to pause the show to look more closely at what was in front of me. One of the women was chatting to her friends, and the hair that lay on her shoulder was so frazzled and lifeless, I had to inspect what was happening there. I am always on high alert for troubled hair, having had my own issues over the decade I spent torturing my follicles with bleach. Sure enough, this woman’s situation had been caused by the very same culprit. The ombre blonde ends of her very dark hair were in a bad way.
