Research Learning Experiences

Know it first

At UMaine you can jump into real research or professional practices in your first or second year on our Orono or Machias campuses with a Research Learning Experience (RLE) course.  These courses give you experiences early that can open your mind to different ways of learning and unlock doors to many different horizons. For our incoming first-year students in an RLE, you come to campus a week early, move into your room, meet friends, and set a foundation to succeed in your first semester. Get a free credit toward your fall semester for a small fee. Sophomore RLEs start with the regular semester, but courses offer even more specialized experiences, and the cost of one credit is waived for these courses too.

Select your class level below, and then explore the many RLE courses to choose from across a range of disciplines and topics. Don’t know what your major is yet? No worries! Most RLEs are open to everyone. If you do have an area of interest, take a deeper dive. We can even pick one for you if you don’t know what to choose! Any way you get involved, enjoy the ride, start your college experience right, and get the most out of UMaine.

Sign up for an RLE to get engaged: engaged in research, in creativity, in your communities, and in building a mindset that will help you solve problems for life.

Enrollment deadline extended to August 1 for remaining seats
