The Daily Stream: Paddington Will Win Your Heart And Make You Believe In The World Again

The Daily Stream: Paddington Will Win Your Heart And Make You Believe In The World Again
(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Movie: "Paddington"

Where You Can Stream It: Netflix

The Pitch: There are apps for peace and meditation. There are online yoga classes and breathing techniques available at all times of the day. However, if you really want to find your bliss again and restore your joy, it will take you exactly one hour and 35 minutes to do so, in the form of the film "Paddington." Though you will hear grand and very well-deserved praise for "Paddington 2," the first film occupies a special place in my head.

You see, I saw this film after its sequel, which I loved with all my heart. I will sometimes watch the prison scenes from that film if I'm having an especially bad

The Daily Stream: Things Is DIY Horror Madness You Need To See To Believe

The Daily Stream: Things Is DIY Horror Madness You Need To See To Believe
The Movie: "Things"

Where You Can Stream It: Shudder, Tubi

The Pitch: What do you do when you visit a cabin in the woods? If you are the friends at the center of 1989's "Things," then you sit around and drink beer. Maybe you walk around the house a little bit only to find that a bunch of giant ant creatures are secretly roaming around. Perhaps you will occasionally watch the news hosted by an adult film star.

Look, I understand that this synopsis could be a lot more straightforward. However, Andrew Jordan's infamous DIY horror is anything but straightforward, veering wildly between plot lines and tones across its 83-minute runtime. There are about five to ten straight minutes of our central characters doing nothing before something crazy happens, only to go back to yet another long stretch of nothingness. Their Canadian accents are so strong that your

The Daily Stream: The Master Finds Paul Thomas Anderson (And America) At A Crossroads
(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Movie: "The Master" (2012)

Where You Can Stream It: Mubi

The Pitch: WWII Navy vet Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) struggles to find his way in 1950s America, his self-destructive tendencies and unpredictable violent outbursts costing him one job after another. One night, in San Francisco, Freddie crosses paths with Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), an authoritative figure who describes himself as "a writer, a doctor, a nuclear physicist, and a theoretical philosopher," but above all else "a hopelessly inquisitive man." He's also the founder and leader of The Cause, a cryptic and often baffling philosophical movement that anyone on the outside looking in can quickly recognize as a cult. Yet, for Freddie, The Cause and, more pointedly, its creator, seem

Jack Black's Bowser Voice In The Super Mario Bros. Trailer Is Not What We Expected

Jack Black's Bowser Voice In The Super Mario Bros. Trailer Is Not What We Expected
The animation studio Illumination has made a feature film based on the 1985 Nintendo game "Super Mario Bros." and every decision they have made has been baffling. Making the film at all seemed like a dodgy proposition from the start, as the last attempt to make a Mario movie -- a strange dinosaur-themed dystopian movie with Dennis Hopper, Bob Hoskins, and John Leguizamo -- resulted in critical panning and box office losses. This author feels that 1993's "Super Mario Bros." was a perfectly entertaining, delightfully weird, high-octane version of the game, but few agree. Now, 29 years later, attempt number two has arrived.

A second strange choice for Aaron Horvath's and Michael Jelenic's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" was its all-star American voice cast. For many years, in the video games, Mario had been voiced by Charles Martinet, who also voiced series staples Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi. Martinet gave Mario a high-pitched,

CAA Media Finance will represent this film’s worldwide rights with Hillcoat producing with Jonathan Pavesi through Blank Films Inc.

The movie is set in an exclusive gated community in the desert on the outskirts of Los Angeles where thirty-two adults, all brilliant, successful professionals, who have built their homes with pride, are brutally murdered, and their children abducted with not so much as a trace. A Forensic Psychologist is enlisted to delve into the circumstances of this heinous crime. As their investigation continues and they dig deeper into the events, they soon runs into conflict with their superiors as their suspicions fall on a very different kind of community – a religious cult, invoking memories of the Branch Davidians and their charismatic leader, David Koresh.

The Daily Stream: Women And Men Can Be Friends In Morning Glory
(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Movie: "Morning Glory"

Where You Can Stream It: Paramount+

The Pitch: Becky Fuller (Rachel McAdams) is a morning show producer at a local New Jersey television station. Though she doesn't have the credentials and education you would expect from someone in her position, she is quite good at what she does. Unfortunately, that doesn't stop her from getting sacked after the station goes through budget cuts and consolidation.

After applying to any gig she can, Becky gets...

The Series: "Spy x Family"

The Pitch: Wallace Shawn, playing himself, is a struggling playwright and actor living in New York. ‘Torn Hearts’ Review

‘Torn Hearts’ Review
Stars: Abby Quinn, Alexxis Lemire, Shiloh Fernandez, Katey Sagal, Joshua Leonard, Alon McKlveen | Written by Rachel Koller Croft | Directed by Brea Grant

Torn Hearts is actress Brea Grant’s follow-up to her directorial debut, 12 Hour Shift. Here she’s turned her attention to the music industry. And while genre films about the price of fame stretch from The Phantom of the Opera to The Phantom of the Paradise and The 27 Club most of them are set in the world of rock, and frequently heavy metal. The closest I can think to a county-themed one is the Faustian Southern Rock tale Dark Roads 79.

Torn Hearts is both the title of the film and the name of the musical act led by Jordan and Leigh. They’re desperate to go from popular in Nashville to the big time and it looks like they’re about to get their chance as an

Globo Filmes Boards 20 Movies, Ups Range, Overseas Ambitions (Exclusive)

Globo Filmes Boards 20 Movies, Ups Range, Overseas Ambitions (Exclusive)
Setting the agenda for much top Brazilian cinema bowing over 2022-25, Globo Filmes has boarded 20 new Brazilian movies, powering up by far the biggest production slate of any company in Brazil.

New titles from many of Brazil’s good and great range from Cinema Novo veteran Zelito Viana to Oscar-shortlisted Cao Hambuger. The production slate features obvious big commercial plays for domestic audiences such as “Tô de Graça, o Filme,” a movie spin-off from the hugely popular sitcom franchise.

The lineup, however, displays a far larger auteurist edge than in the past, with awaited new movies from young female auteurs such as Juliana Rojas and Beatriz Seigner and battling Black filmmakers Jeferson De, Grace Passo and Sabrina Fidalgo.

The slate also features big crossover titles which bid fair to feature at some of the biggest film festivals around the world, such as Hamburger’s “School Without Gates,” “Macunaíma 21,” from Felipe Bragança and Zahi Guajajara,

The Movie: "The Passion of Joan of Arc"

Where You Can Stream It: HBO Max, The Criterion Channel

The Pitch: "The Passion of Joan of Arc" is one of those films that pitches itself right at the outset, as text informs the viewer that a library in Paris "holds one of the most extraordinary documents in the history of the world" -- a record of the trial of the 15th-century French martyr Joan of Arc, who was...

The Movie: "The Last Waltz"

Where You Can Stream It: Prime Video, Criterion Channel, Pluto TV, Tubi

The Pitch: While everyone wants to believe that the band they are in will last the test of time, most bands are not The Rolling Stones. The Pitch For National Treasure Was Almost Too Out-There For Nicolas Cage

The Pitch For National Treasure Was Almost Too Out-There For Nicolas Cage
Nicolas Cage has stepped into the shoes of some pretty bizarre characters over the course of his career. Starting with "Vampire's Kiss" in 1988 as douchey literary agent who starts to believe he's a vampire, the actor has gone on to portray twin Andy Kaufmans, a sociopath who steals the face of his rival, a treasure hunter who steals the Declaration of Independence, and a misogynistic police-man who takes on a pagan matriarchy. And that's just through 2006!

Cage's prolific nature and knack for playing parts other actors might steer clear of is a testament to his range. Plenty of movies --...

The Daily Stream: Betty Is A Superb Slice Of Skater Girl Life
(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Series: "Betty"

Where You Can Stream It: HBO Max

The Pitch: A group of young women skate through their adolescence -- and New York City -- in this superb extension of Crystal Moselle's 2018 movie "Skate Kitchen." The title, "Betty," is a slang term used to describe cool skateboarder chicks, but the show actually excels because it makes its found family of girl skaters look enviably awesome without ever once sensationalizing them....

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Series: "Angel"

Where You Can Stream It: Hulu

The Pitch: Joss Whedon is problematic. Let's just leave that there, so it hangs over everything I'm going to say. Without getting into a debate about the art versus the artist, I have mixed feelings about writing this, but with that said, Whedon was not the only creative involved in this series, which ran from 1999 through 2004. A whole lot of people worked on it, and their work matters...
