I saw the Netflix series Dahmer which chronicles the life of serial killer and cannibal Jeffery Dahmer. Not an easy watch and I found there was a graphic novel about his time in high school.
The author of the novel knew Dahmer and retells his memories of being a somewhat friend to him-more like an associate really- and it's so disturbing how much I felt sorry for Dahmer here. The author makes it clear in his own words at the epilogue Jeffery Dahmer was a sick, twisted monster who no one should feel an ounce of sympathy for.
And he also acknowledges and shows what this teenage, socially awkard, bullied, alcohol abusing kid, who goes home to a very dysfunctional family, feels. We see a few glimpses of normal teenager, and the author ponders "what if X happened, would he have turned out differently? Where were the adults to see the signs!"
It's a disturbing tale not because there's any macabre drawings, but because of the future knowledge of what this kid would become
