International Nurses Day 2022
Today is International Nurses Day – the theme is A Voice to Lead – invest in Nursing and Respect Right to Secure Global Health.
Today is a day for all our nurses in New Zealand – those working in community health, primary care, aged residential care, DHBs and elsewhere – to stand up and be proud; to stand back and be recognised for your mahi throughout the country all day, every day.
It's been a really tough couple of years and our nurses have helped steer out COVID-19 response.
We can’t do this work alone – our nursing workforce is already the biggest it has ever been – but we know we need more nurses.
A number of initiatives are underway to bolster our nursing workforce. Now more than ever nurses can continue to create rewarding careers and leave a lasting impact with the patients they treat back to good health.
Nursing is a passion and a vocation for me and, as Chief Nursing Officer, I want to thank everyone in the sector for consistently giving their all for the health sector.

TranscriptToday’s the day to recognise our nurses and really thank them for the contribution they’ve made to New Zealand Aotearoa.
Never has there been a time when we’ve need nurses to come to the forefront. They heard our call and answered our call.
From primary care, through to community, aged residential care, right through our Maori and Pacific health providers, nurses have led the charge in terms of our vaccination rates, our swabbing and providing day to day care.
In our hospitals, we’ve seen our nuyrses care tirelessly for COVID patients and at the same time, care for the rest of their patients.
This is a fantastic opportunity – International Nurses’ Day – to really recognise our colleagues working across our health sector.
