Dakota Johnson described the making of “Fifty Shades of Grey” as “psychotic” in a new cover story for Vanity Fair magazine. The actor became an international star after being cast as Anastasia “Ana” Steele in the three-film franchise, but she said making the trilogy became complicated in part because of “the author of the books.” That would be E.L. Ethan Hawke has signed on to star in Pedro Almodóvar’s next film, “Strange Way of Life,” (“Extraña forma de vida”), a half-hour Western.

The Spanish director will shoot the short before making his English-language feature debut, “A Manual for Cleaning Women,” with Cate Blanchett.

Hawke stars opposite Chile’s Pedro Pascal, who portrayed Oberyn Martell in “Game of Thrones,” in a film which will be “another exercise of freedom in the line of ‘The Human Voice,’” said producer Agustín Almodóvar.

The short will be shot in English. Set up at El Deseo, the Almodóvar brothers’ Madrid-based production company, “Strange Way of Life” begins with a man, Silva, riding on a horse across a desert to Bitter Creek. He has come to visit Sheriff Jake. 25 years earlier, the two men worked together as hired gunmen.

Silva comes with the pretext of re-encountering his friend from youth. They celebrate their re-encounter.

“True Detective” Season 4 has officially been greenlit at HBO, with Kali Reis now set to star opposite previously announced lead Jodie Foster.

The new season of the anthology drama was first reported as being in the works at the premium cabler in March. Mary Mara, an actress known for roles in ER, Criminal Minds, Ray Donovan and Law & Order, has died. She was 61.

In a report published Monday by the New York State Police, officials confirmed that Mara’s body was discovered in the St. Lawrence River in Cape Vincent, N.Y. on the morning of June 26. The preliminary investigation suggests Mara drowned while swimming.

According to the report, there were no signs of foul play. Mara was transported to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office where an official cause of death will be determined by an autopsy. The investigation is ongoing.
