President Joe Biden is stepping up his administration’s response to a nationwide baby formula shortage that has forced frenzied parents into online groups to swap and sell to each other to keep their babies fed. The White House says Biden spoke Thursday with executives from manufacturers Reckitt and Gerber about how they could increase production and how his administration could help. And he talked with leaders from Walmart and Target about how to restock shelves. The shortage stems from supply chain disruptions and a safety recall. Retailers are limiting what customers can buy, and doctors are urging parents to contact food banks, physicians' offices as well as warning against watered-down formula or making DIY recipes.

A Georgia representative wants Congress to condemn attempts to criminally prosecute people who perform abortions or women who have abortions or experience miscarriages. Rep. Nikema Willams is introducing her House resolution on Thursday. The Atlanta Democrat used to be a lobbyist for Planned Parenthood in the southeast. She also chairs the Democratic Party of Georgia. The move comes after Senate Republicans used the filibuster to block Democratic efforts to enshrine abortion access into federal law. Elected officials across the country are anticipating a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that will overturn the nationwide right to abortion.

The Minnesota Senate Democratic minority has tried unsuccessfully to force consideration of nine abortion and health-related bills that the Republican majority has kept bottled up in committee. The leak of a draft U.S. Supreme Court opinion that would overrule the landmark Roe v. Wade decision has energized both sides of the abortion debate in Minnesota. Democrats knew they lacked the votes to prevail Thursday. But Senate Minority Leader Melisa López Franzen says her fellow Democrats wanted to send a message to Minnesotans. She says they'll fight to protect privacy and reproductive rights, including the right to abortion, while Republicans won’t.

The new White House COVID-19 coordinator is issuing a dire warning. He says in an Associated Press interview that the U.S. will be increasingly vulnerable to the coronavirus this fall and winter if Congress doesn’t swiftly approve new funding for more vaccines and treatments. Dr. Ashish Jha said in the interview Thursday that Americans’ immune protection from the virus is waning, the virus is adapting to be more contagious and booster doses for most people will be necessary — with the potential for enhanced protection from a new generation of shots.
