SNL Tackles Possible Roe v. Wade Reversal With Trip to the Middle Ages

SNL Tackles Possible Roe v. Wade Reversal With Trip to the Middle Ages
NBC’s Saturday Night Live didn’t make it through the culture wars of the last 40 or so years by sticking its neck out for politics. But this week, the show’s cold open dove right into the furor over banning abortion after the draft of a decision leaked from the Supreme Court.

Because Justice Samuel Alito pulled one of his arguments from a centuries-old British jurist who put women to death for witchcraft, the sketch is set in 13th-century England. The first odd thing is that the guest host — who rarely puts in an appearance during the cold open — is front and center.

‘Saturday Night Live’ Cold Open: Benedict Cumberbatch Sketch Riffs on Roe v. Wade and Depp v. Heard
Saturday Night Live” host Benedict Cumberbatch dove right in to the action in his second time out as host, appearing in the cold open sketch that took aim at the Supreme Court’s move on abortion rights and the spectacle of the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation trial.

Cumberbatch, star of the latest MCU movie release “Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” appeared in a 13th century sword-and-sandals costume, complete with a Prince Valiant wig, as he and two others sitting in a castle debated how to govern women’s reproductive rights.

The sketch opened with a voice-over

‘Operation Mincemeat’: Colin Firth on ‘Complex Tussle’ of World War II Story

‘Operation Mincemeat’: Colin Firth on ‘Complex Tussle’ of World War II Story
True story: One of the greatest undercover World War II agents was a corpse. In 1943, a top-secret British naval intelligence committee, including savvy barrister Ewen Montagu (Colin Firth), came up with an ingenious way to mislead Germany about troop movements. The plan, mesmerizingly executed in this film, was to dress a dead man as a military courier, give him fake documents, set the body adrift in the ocean (as if he’d drowned after parachuting out of a plane) and hope he was found and his “intel” sent to Hitler. The wrinkle in this telling: Montagu and MI5 agent Charles Cholmondeley (Matthew Macfadyen) both fall for ambitious secretary Jean Leslie (Kelly Macdonald). Says Firth, “It becomes a complex tussle of unresolved, unexpressed emotions, fed by the high stakes.” Operation Mincemeat, Original Film Debut, Wednesday, May 11, Netflix

Rose Leslie & Theo James Talk the Possibility of More ‘Time Traveler’s Wife’

Rose Leslie & Theo James Talk the Possibility of More ‘Time Traveler’s Wife’
If the title sounds familiar, there’s a good reason: The Time Traveler’s Wife was not only a 2003 bestseller by Audrey Niffenegger, but it inspired a 2009 movie adaptation starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana. That said, forget what you think you know about the story — this new HBO version promises to deliver a fresh take on a heartbreaking love story. The six-episode series stars Theo James as Henry DeTamble, a dashing librarian with a genetic disorder that causes him to time travel unwillingly, disappearing for chunks of time into his past and future; Rose Leslie is his wife, Clare Abshire, who at age 6 meets an adult Henry and develops a friendship with this mysterious older man. It’s only when she encounters him in the present day in her 20s — with him completely oblivious to their connection, as their previous encounters were from his future self — that the two are

John C. Reilly on His Favorite Directors: ‘Paul Thomas Anderson Was the First One Who Put It All Together’

John C. Reilly on His Favorite Directors: ‘Paul Thomas Anderson Was the First One Who Put It All Together’
John C. Reilly is back in the limelight for his turn as Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss on “Winning Time,” the HBO series from longtime collaborator Adam McKay. The show marks his first TV drama role, one of the few things Reilly had yet to accomplish in his long Hollywood career that includes collaborations with many of film’s top directors.

Reilly recently sat down with Vulture for a wide-ranging discussion about his career where he offered new details about his experiences working with Paul Thomas Anderson and Martin Scorsese.

“Well, those directors all discovered me one at a time,” Reilly said. “Brian De Palma literally did discover me (for ‘Casualties of War’), and after that, the others were like, ‘Oh my God, I found the perfect person for this role. I don’t know where this kid came from, but he’s perfect.'”

However, Reilly gives Paul

Inside the Bizarre Music of Reality Shows Like ‘Selling Sunset’

Inside the Bizarre Music of Reality Shows Like ‘Selling Sunset’
There was a time when reality TV used pop music that was actually popular. Needle drops on Laguna Beach, for example, included songs by Hilary Duff, Dashboard Confessional, and All-American Rejects. Its spinoff The Hills featured songs by Pink, Rihanna, and, of course, Natasha Bedingfield. And then there’s Selling Sunset. Like many other reality shows of the 2010s and 2020s — Love Is Blind, Bling Empire, Married at First Sight, 12 Dates of Christmas, and countless others — Selling Sunset uses music that isn’t recognizable and is thus cheap to license. Much of these shows’ soundtracks comes from vast libraries of stock music with options for every mood, tone, and emotion. But what sets Selling Sunset’s music apart are the ridiculous lyrics. The actual lyrics of a song played during one episode’s main titles: “I’m not the type to break up with my kidney / So watch me while I work.

Fred Savage Fired from ‘The Wonder Years’ Reboot for ‘Inappropriate Conduct’

‘Portals to Hell’ Visits Philadelphia’s Haunted & Unsettling Fort Mifflin
Growing up in the Philadelphia suburbs, class trips to historic Fort Mifflin were as common as they were kind of boring. These days, however, the stronghold that sits on the Delaware River is considered one of the most haunted places in town. So I was all in when Portals to Hell hosts Jack Osbourne and Katrina Weidman invited me for a tour of the grounds while their crews set up to film the May 7 episode. “There were about 150 Colonial Americans killed here,” Osbourne told me, explaining how Washington’s troops were “decimated” during a British naval attack. And some of them are apparently still hanging around. As we walked through a few of the more active areas, Weidman shared ghost stories. Guests have reported “seeing glowing eyes and shifting shadows” in the windowless, very unsettling armory where we stood. Recently, students visiting from a local school for the blind all
