Updates to List of Acceptable File Types
Issue No. 962 - May 10, 2022
Beginning June 9, 2022, the Copyright Office will no longer accept electronic deposits in the following formats:
- .db
- .mdb
- .mid
- .midi
- .rmi
- .ra
- .ram
- .rm
- .rv
- .htm
- .fdr
- .cab
- .rar
As of June 9, 2022, the file-blocking feature in the electronic registration system (eCO) will prevent applicants from uploading these file formats. If an applicant would like to upload an electronic deposit that is saved in one of these formats on or after this date, they will need to convert the file to a format that the system will accept. The list of file types the Office accepts is available here.
The Copyright Office receives few deposits in these formats, but they are often problematic and can result in registration delays. If the Office cannot open a file or cannot fully review its contents or if a file poses a security risk, the applicant must resubmit their work in an acceptable file type. This may result in a later effective date of registration (EDR). When the electronic registration system blocks a file, it immediately notifies the applicant that they must submit the work in a different format. Information about the eCO file-blocking feature is available here (page 6 under “December 16, 2017, Release”).
