‘Abbott Elementary’ and Quinta Brunson Could School the Emmys With Record-Breaking Nominations for Black Women
If the Oscars were looking for a good mood with “Coda,” then the TV Academy might look to Philadelphia school teachers’ delightful and charming maneuvers with ABC’s hit show “Abbott Elementary,” which just had its season finale on April 12. Created, written and executive produced by it-girl Quinta Brunson, the mockumentary sitcom serves as a lovely reminder of the challenges that educators face daily, both in pre- and post-pandemic society, that undervalues their contributions and roles in the lives of our children. As broadcast television continues its struggles with viewership and overall presence in the awards races, the ABC comedy

Netflix’s ‘John Wayne Gacy Tapes’ Is a Revelatory Look at the Serial Killer Who Fed Off 1970s Gay Panic

Netflix’s ‘John Wayne Gacy Tapes’ Is a Revelatory Look at the Serial Killer Who Fed Off 1970s Gay Panic
The split between the public John Wayne Gacy and the private one is among the most chilling in true crime history. Gacy, who lived and killed in Illinois in the 1970s, was the life of the party, a Democratic precinct captain, and an occasional birthday clown who threw backyard barbecues and offered gainful employment to many local young men.

But underneath his veneer of generosity, Gacy was a self-loathing narcissist and psychopath whose largesse was bait for sex with teenage boys, and once he got what he wanted, the threat of exposing his sexuality led him to brutally torture and murder them. Some of their corpses were buried under the very backyard fire pit where he entertained them. Others, in his basement.

Ultimately, Gacy killed 33 boys and young men, with only a few surviving those attacks. One of those survivors was Steve Nemmers, who outsmarted Gacy as a teenager and now,

‘Better Call Saul’ Hired a Dance Troupe to Stage the Wordless Season 6 Opening Sequence

‘Better Call Saul’ Hired a Dance Troupe to Stage the Wordless Season 6 Opening Sequence
Season 6 of “Better Call Saul” is a tiny break from tradition from the start. Rather than open on Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) living out his days as an assuming Cinnabon employee in Omaha, Nebraska, the season premiere “Wine and Roses” starts on a melancholy tour through the house he left behind. There’s a glimpse of his flashy, rainbow-colored wardrobe, lavish wall art, and a general interior decor that’s far more palatial than you might expect from the Jimmy we’ve seen over the first five seasons of the AMC series.

As the camera winds its way through inside corridors and out toward the dumpster and moving van hauling everything away, the house-clearers dispatch all of Jimmy’s things with ballet-like precision. Of course, as the episode’s cinematographer Marshall Adams describes it, that’s not a coincidence at all.

“[Director] Michael [Morris] and our first Ad Rich Sickler had this

It’s been three long years, but one show we’re really looking forward to seeing return — and dominate — the TV landscape is HBO’s Emmy-winning dark comedy Barry. And it comes back after one heck of a nail-biting cliffhanger. In the Season 2 finale, contract killer/wannabe actor Barry (Bill Hader) is outed as a murderer to his beloved theater coach, Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler), when Gene learns that his meek student was responsible for taking down the woman he loves. Ouch. When the twisted tale picks up, not much time has passed and Barry has to make a lot of quick decisions if he’s going to keep himself from going to jail for his crimes. Danny Roberts on ‘The Real World Homecoming: New Orleans’ and Why Revisiting His Relationship With Paul ‘Needed to Happen’

Danny Roberts on ‘The Real World Homecoming: New Orleans’ and Why Revisiting His Relationship With Paul ‘Needed to Happen’
There are few alumni of MTV’s “The Real World” who have had as lasting a legacy as Danny Roberts. When the Georgia native stepped into the house for 2000’s “The Real World: New Orleans,” he was a strikingly handsome 22-year-old college graduate who was, at that point, still one of the few openly gay people on television. That would’ve been enough to make Danny famous, but his ongoing relationship with Paul Dill — a U.S. Army captain during the era of the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy — made Danny a sensation. To protect Paul’s identity,
