Hot Docs Forum Highlights Chilean Storytelling With Made In Chile Strand
In collaboration with Hot Docs 2022, Chiledoc announced that the Toronto-based festival will showcase seven Chilean documentaries as part of its Made In Chile strand.

Screening from April 29, the selections highlight the burgeoning global impact of Chile’s spirited documentary film initiative, encompassing diverse and bold perspectives from new voices nationwide.

As North America’s largest documentary film festival, conference and market, Hot Docs strives to forge essential relationships that lead to production opportunities for documentary filmmakers with a keen eye on the global market.

“We are excited to celebrate and spotlight this new movement of documentary filmmakers from Chile,” shares Shane Smith, director of programming for Hot Docs. “Their bold and daring approach to reexamining their country’s multifaceted history while crafting powerful and distinctively Chilean stories is making the documentary industry, and the world, take notice.”

Made in Chile bows, indeed, just days after “My Imaginary Country,” from Patricio Guzmán,

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Calls Out ‘Toxic’ Fans for Criticizing ‘Walking Dead’ Spinoff Casting

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Calls Out ‘Toxic’ Fans for Criticizing ‘Walking Dead’ Spinoff Casting
One “Walking Dead” character got the axe for an upcoming spin-off, and fans were quick to jump to conclusions over the cause of the cast switch-up. However, lead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan weighed in to clap back against assumptions.

“Some of you have gone Way too far. Toxic,” Morgan tweeted April 28.

AMC announced in September 2020 that a spin-off series starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride would follow their respective fan-favorite characters, Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier. Showrunner Angela Kang previously described the series as a “road show” for Carol and Daryl.

However, the network confirmed that actress McBride will be exiting the as-yet untitled series ahead of production in Europe.

“Relocating to Europe became logistically untenable for Melissa at this time,” the AMC spokesperson said, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

Former co-star Morgan, who is leading another spin-off, “Isle of the Dead,” with Lauren Cohan set in New York City,

The ‘Planet of the Apes’ Trilogy on 4K Uhd Is Nearly Half Off Right Now

The ‘Planet of the Apes’ Trilogy on 4K Uhd Is Nearly Half Off Right Now
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Variety may receive an affiliate commission.

Quality film trilogies are hard to come by. In the more than 10 years since the “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” was first released, spawning two nearly-perfect sequels in “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” and “War for the Planet of the Apes,” it’s hard to think of other enduring franchises that have been able to pack in coherent storylines, with a satisfying ending to boot, as successfully as the sci-fi action series.

Apes fans will be happy to know that the entire trilogy in 4K Uhd is 44 off on Amazon right now, bringing down the price for all three films to only 25. The 4K upgrade, which was first introduced on Blu-ray in 2017, is particularly helpful in making up for the films’ famously dark lighting — in higher resolution,

15 Bob's Burgers Side Characters We Wish Got More Screen Time

15 Bob's Burgers Side Characters We Wish Got More Screen Time
There's a lot to love about Fox's quirky animated family comedy "Bob's Burgers," from the Christmas specials, to the Halloween specials, to the Thanksgiving specials. There are a lot of holiday episodes, okay? Even beyond the abundance of yearly festivities, there's so much to appreciate in the wacky, weird, wonderful world of Wonder Wharf. There's the Belcher family, of course. Bob and Linda prove that marriage can be as fun and loving as it is messy and frustrating, and Louise, Tina, and Gene test their parents' patience with never-ending wacky schemes.

But what about the rest of the town's residents? The eccentric landlord, Mr. Fischoeder, Hugo the...

‘The Marvels’ and ‘Ant-Man 3’ Swap Release Dates in 2023

‘The Marvels’ and ‘Ant-Man 3’ Swap Release Dates in 2023
Marvel Studios productions “The Marvels” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” are swapping release dates, Disney announced Friday.

The Marvels,” the sequel to 2019’s “Captain Marvel,” was originally due to open in theaters on Feb. 17, 2023, and “Quantumania,” the third movie in the “Ant-Man” series, was set to open on July 28, 2023.

Instead, “Quantumania” will now bow first in February, and “The Marvels” will debut in July.

Insiders say this was a matter of “Quantumania” simply being further along in its creative process than “The Marvels,” as the former has wrapped principal photography while “The Marvels” still has a bit more to go. Marvel Studios’ other big theatrical release in 2023, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” is still set to debut on May 5, 2023.

The release date shuffling is likely to raise eyebrows among hardcore observers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as it suggests that the 2023 feature projects aren’t as closely linked as previous MCU movies.

‘Moon Knight’: Visualizing Marvel’s Mind-Bending Miniseries as a Battle Between the Two Oscar Isaacs

‘Moon Knight’: Visualizing Marvel’s Mind-Bending Miniseries as a Battle Between the Two Oscar Isaacs
Love it or hate it, “Moon Knight” at least pushes Marvel’s Disney+ programming into ambitious psychological territory. The mind-bending story of Oscar Isaac battling Oscar Isaac — in the dueling roles of hardened mercenary Marc Spector/Moon Knight and sensitive museum gift shop worker Steven Grant/Mr. Knight — is a confounding rabbit hole of childhood trauma, dissociative identity disorder (Did), and Egyptian mythology. By comparison, “WandaVision” and “Loki” seem like a walk in the park.

But when it came to visualizing “Moon Knight” through the costume design of Meghan Kasperlik and the cinematography of Gregory Middleton (“Game of Thrones”) and Andrew Droz Palermo (“The Green Knight”), the great challenge and opportunity was to convey Did through two distinct POVs. It was almost like making two shows: horror meets superhero. Isaac, who also serves as an executive producer, was a key collaborator.

“I worked closely with Oscar on both [Marc and Steven],” Kasperlik told IndieWire.

‘Jeannette’ Review: A Subtle But Impactful Portrait of a Pulse Survivor [Sffilm]
Following its titular subject in the aftermath of the 2016 Pulse Nightclub Shooting, Maris Curran’s introspective documentary “Jeannette” is less about creating a comprehensive portrait of the massacre. Instead, the film zooms in considerably to showcase how Jeanette, a queer Puerto Rican mother living in Orlando, reintegrates into society after surviving. Specific and thoughtful, Curran has chosen a fascinating subject to put at the center of a film that occasionally feels slight, but also leaves an indelible impression.

Adams first started working in the comics industry in the early '60s but he was not initially successful in finding work at DC Comics. So instead, he worked in newspaper comic strips for a time, with "Ben Casey" being a notable example. He then transitioned to more mainstream comics...

It Took More Than A Few Rejected Scripts To Find The Right Tone For American Psycho

It Took More Than A Few Rejected Scripts To Find The Right Tone For American Psycho
Certified modern classic "American Psycho" was up against a major challenge in its conception: adapting a beloved novel and translating it onscreen. The first step in that process, after acquiring the rights to the story, was to find the perfect screenplay to bring it to life. The script would act as a roadmap in guiding the film to its completion, and the wrong map could have led the film down the path of obsoletion.

Jonathan Pressman, the producer of "American Psycho," had a very specific vision for the film that was more than just a strict adherence to the...

Kids In The Hall Were Already Ahead Of Their Time When They Started In The '80s

Kids In The Hall Were Already Ahead Of Their Time When They Started In The '80s
The "Kids in the Hall" sketch comedy show didn't debut on Canadian television until October of 1988, but the Kids themselves — Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Mike McKinney, Kevin McDonald, and Scott Thompson — first met and formed in Toronto in 1984. The story goes, according to the Canadian Encyclopedia, that McCulloch and McKinney, working with their troupe The Audience, met and fused with Foley and McDonalds, who were already calling themselves Kids in the Hall. Thompson joined in 1985, and the quintet worked the Toronto stand-up scene performing sketches live on stage for about a year. The Kids split...

CinemaCon Report Card: Which Studios Wowed the Crowd, and Which Lacked Sizzle

CinemaCon Report Card: Which Studios Wowed the Crowd, and Which Lacked Sizzle
The curtain has closed on CinemaCon, and this year’s gathering of movie theater owners managed to come and go with nary a mention of the exhibition industry’s persona non grata, Netflix.

The streaming giant is usually a punching bag as Hollywood studios and film operators spend a week in Las Vegas to wax poetic about the communal power of going to see movies on the big screen. But following a year of experimenting with different release strategies and launching their own digital platforms, studios can’t really take aim at Netflix’s disdain of exclusive theatrical windows. Still, the awkwardness that loomed over last year’s convention didn’t appear to linger in 2022 as traditional studios reassured exhibitors that they would have plenty of new sequels and superhero pics to draw crowds. All those fights over theatrical exclusivity appeared to have been resolved … at least for now.

‘The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes’ Review: A Surface, Tabloid-y Dive Into Monroe’s Death
Existing in the marginal space between conspiracy Twitter-thread and National Enquirer article, Emma Cooper’s Marilyn Monroe Netflix doc, the unwieldy “The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes,” is a 100-minute rehashing of Anthony Summers’ 1985 book “Goddess: The Secret Lives of Marilyn Monroe.” Updated little since that book was published almost four decades ago, Cooper’s doc plays out like mad libs for the conspiracy-minded.

Why Jet Li Wanted Fearless To Be His Last Martial Arts Movie

14 Sci-Fi Movies That Went Too Far

14 Sci-Fi Movies That Went Too Far
We fully expect our science fiction to transport us to far-off places, to unimaginable alien vistas populated by things beyond our wildest dreams. We actively want to be confronted by the unknown on our flight of fancy. But, even for a genre obsessed with pushing the limits of outer space or the inner space of our minds, it's occasionally possible to boldly go a little too far.

Perhaps it's the theme itself that disturbs our conventional sensibilities, or where an element of horror suddenly emerges where there wasn't any, startling us like an animatronic monster popping up in a ghost train. Maybe it's a sudden shift in tone altering...

Francis Ford Coppola can't be an easy role to play. Early on during the filming of the series, though, Dan Fogler felt fairly at ease playing the maestro. The actor, who's previously directed as well, related enough to the filmmaker. Despite all the obvious pressure involved, Fogler felt A-ok portraying...
