Raúl Esparza Returning to ‘Law & Order: Svu’ for Season 23 Finale

Raúl Esparza Returning to ‘Law & Order: Svu’ for Season 23 Finale
Raúl Esparza will return to “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” as attorney Rafael Barba in the season 23 finale, NBC confirmed to TheWrap on Thursday.

In the May 19 episode, Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) asks for his help when a victim of domestic violence — who’ll be played by Jordana Spiro of TBS comedy “My Boys” — is prosecuted.

The former Assistant District Attorney was last seen in the December episode “The People Vs. Richard Wheatley,” in which he defended Dylan McDermott’s mobster for the murder of Kathy Stabler. He successfully deadlocked the jury, resulting in a mistrial, and also succeeded in alienating Svu captain Olivia (Mariska Hargitay), who had begged him not to take the case.

Esparza made his “Svu”debut in Season 14 and became a series regular the following season, before leaving in Season 19. He has since returned as an “Svu” guest star and also appeared on “Law & Order: Organized Crime.

‘Swimming with Sharks’ Has Nothing in Common with ‘All About Eve,’ Says Showrunner
Swimming with Sharks” has waded into dangerously realistic waters while showcasing the abuse at the heart of Hollywood, but showrunner Kathleen Robertson wants to clarify that the Roku Channel series is anything but a woman-versus-woman cautionary tale.

The psychological thriller, now streaming, stars Kiernan Shipka as a Los Angeles newcomer who becomes the assistant to an ambitious studio executive played by Diane Kruger. Inspired by the 1994 film of the same name, “Swimming with Sharks” gender-swapped its two lead characters for a female-driven story.

“My feeling was if I could use this world as a jumping-off point, but have it be told through the eyes of two very complex women, there would be something there,” writer-producer Robertson told Black Book Magazine. “I’ve been a working actor since the age of 10 so this industry is very much a part of my identity. I grew up on sets. I have my 10,000 hours,

‘We Own This City’ Is the Perfect Marriage of Material and Its Co-Creators, David Simon and George Pelecanos: TV Review
Scripted limited-run dramas inspired by recent, buzzy true-crime tales have recently oversaturated the market. And yet for as many as there are, notably few have drawn from what is arguably America’s most consequential (and most intractable) criminal justice phenomenon. The problem of dysfunctional policing and its disproportionate impact on communities of color has been largely ignored by scripted television, save for occasional arcs on the fictional police dramas whose rose-tinted views of police work have contributed to that very issue. (The quality of such well-intentioned episodes generally ranges between “Not totally humiliating” and “May induce cringe spasms.”)

‘We Own This City’ Explores Where Policing Is Going Wrong in the Drug War
Fourteen years after the conclusion of The Wire — the seminal Baltimore drama about drugs, racism and police corruption — exec producers David Simon and George Pelecanos return to the scene of the crimes with a new limited series, We Own This City. “On the surface, this is about the [rise and fall] of the Baltimore Gun Trace Task Force,” Pelecanos says of the series, based on local reporter Justin Fenton’s nonfiction book. “But David and I saw it as a way to talk about policing in general and where it’s going wrong with regard to the drug war. The story and the players are real.” (Credit: Paul Schiraldi/HBO) Led by superstar sergeant Wayne Jenkins (a riveting Jon Bernthal), the Gttf was commended for its arrest and gun retrieval numbers. At the same time, its members shook down civilians, robbed cash and narcotics from dealers, and sold some of the confiscated drugs and arms.

‘Killing Eve’ Author Slams Series Finale for ‘Bowing to Convention’

‘Killing Eve’ Author Slams Series Finale for ‘Bowing to Convention’
Killing Eve, you’ve got some explaining to do. Author Luke Jennings has chimed in with his opinion about the finale, which aired Sunday, April 10 on BBC America, and he didn’t mince words. Jodie Comer‘s Villanelle is shot dead in the last moments of the Killing Eve series finale, after much of the episode was dedicated to showing her and Sandra Oh‘s Eve’s acceptance of their feelings for each other. Fans got to see the women acting like a normal couple for what ended up being fleeting moments, including a tension-breaking, cathartic kiss that’d been brewing for four seasons, just for the psychopath assassin to be killed in the very last moments. It’s an unfortunate addition to the “bury your gays” trope, where Lgbtqia+ characters — frequently queer women — are robbed of having happily ever afters. Jennings wrote the book series on which Killing Eve is based,
