The end of a long journey is near. On Sunday, the world will finally find out the results of an Oscar race that has taken several unexpected turns in recent months, from early frontrunner “The Power of the Dog” to the surge of popularity for “CODA.” If you’re trying to win your Oscar pool, there is the safe choice for Best Picture and the riskier one. Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson go category by category, explaining the challenge of predicting the short film categories and areas where there could be some upsets, including Best Actress, Animated Feature, and Best Documentary. They also discuss the biggest companies with awards contenders in play while looking back on some of the most impressive campaigns of the season, and whether or not they were effective at getting the job done.

Finally, as the pair prepare to attend the ceremony, they explain why the experience on the ground is going to feel a bit different from previous years.

Read Thompson’s full breakdown here, and stay tuned for more of IndieWire’s Oscar season coverage over the course of the weekend ahead.
