    How to register yourself on the new income tax portal for filing ITR

    To file your income tax return (ITR) using the government's newly launched income tax filing website you must have an account with the portal. So, if you are filing your ITR for the first time, then you will have to first register yourself on the new tax filing portal to file your return.

    Here is a look at the details you will have to provide and a step-by-step guide on how to do register and open an account on the new tax filing website.

    Perquisites for registering on new income tax portal
    Before starting to register yourself on the new income tax portal, one must ensure the following:
    a) An individual should have valid and active PAN
    b) Mobile number
    c) Email ID

    Here's a step-by-step guide on how to register yourself on the new income tax portal
    Step 1: Visit new income tax portal: www.incometax.gov.in
    Step 2: On the new portal, click on 'Register'.

    Step 3: Ensure that 'Taxpayer' is selected. Enter your PAN and click on validate. If your PAN is already registered or inactive, then you will get an error message for the same. You will be required to confirm if you want to register as an 'Individual taxpayer'. Once the PAN is successfully validated, click on 'Continue'.

    Step 4: Next, you will be required to enter basic details such as last name, first name, middle name, date of birth, gender and residential status (Resident/Non-resident). Once these details are filled, click on 'Continue'.

    Step 5: In the next tab, you will be required to provide your contact details, i.e., primary mobile number and primary email ID. You will also be required to select if the primary mobile number and email address belongs to you or someone else. You will also be required to enter your communication address.

    Step 6: Separate one-time passwords (OTPs) will be sent to your mobile number and email ID. Do keep in mind that these OTPs will be valid for only 15 minutes. Click on 'Continue' once the OTPs are entered.

    Step 7: You will be required to verify all the details entered by you in the previous tabs. In case there is any error in the details mentioned by you, you will the get the option edit it in the last step. Once the details are verified, click on 'Confirm'.

    Step 8: Now enter your desired password and enter the same for confirmed password. Do keep in mind that your password should contain the following:
    a) Should have at least 8 and at most 14 characters.
    b) Should have Uppercase and lowercase letters
    c) Should have at least one number
    d) Should have one special characters

    You will also be required to enter your personalised message which can be up to maximum 25 characters. This message will be shown to you every time you login to your account on the new income tax portal.
    This will help you in recognising that you are logging in to the genuine website and not on a fake website.

    Once the message is entered, click on 'Register'. You will be successfully registered on the new income tax portal website.

    Now you can login to file your tax returns and/or access other tax related services.
