ABSTRACT In the last years, the peer-to-peer (P2P) paradigm, which replaces the client-server one, has experienced a great success. A possible reason is large-scale broadband access deployment. P2P is being used for many different applications: grid computing, telephony, mail, etc. However, P2P is mainly associated to file-sharing applications, due to their popularity. On the other hand, satellite communication systems have been widely adopted to offer broadband Internet access in places where terrestrial access is unfeasible. Due to the special characteristics of satellite networks, P2P protocols are quite inefficient in them if compared to other technologies. In this paper, we describe P2P and how it operates on satellite networks. We focus on the problems that arise from the usage of P2P protocols over TCP connections and how they limit overall system performance. Finally, we comment some possible solutions

ABSTRACT Currently, in many engineering areas, including civil engineering, there are increasing demands for various modelling and simulation services that would be accessible over the Web. The basis for such solutions could be existing legacy applications with proven properties, such as numerical stability of the used algorithms. When using traditional infrastructures, such as super computers, clusters or grids, it is necessary to make significant changes in the existing code or even complete re-writing to be able to run such legacy applications on a designated infrastructure. Cloud computing in general, and emerging sky computing technologies, such as mosaic API and platform in particular, make it possible to develop, deploy and monitor Cloud computing applications by re-using existing legacy codes. The mosaic platform can also be used to dynamically provision computational, storage and communication resources, which are needed for such applications, thus reducing operational costs. This paper analyses the possibilities for development of engineering applications by using the mosaic programming model. In the provided case study, an existing Math Works' MATLAB application used for analysis of structures under static loading is used on the Cloud and various benefits, such as elasticity and improved quality are discussed.

Distributed computing infrastructure's data storage subsystems are usually physically scattered among several nodes and logically shared among several users and (local) administrators. It is therefore necessary to provide users with adequate mechanisms and tools for information and data security management, especially in large scale systems since the complexity of the problem increases with the number of users and the amounts of data. In this paper we propose a solution based on a lightweight cryptography algorithm combining the strong and highly secure asymmetric cryptography technique (RSA) with the symmetric cryptography (AES). We describe a possible implementation of our solution going into details of all the algorithms and the mechanisms specified.

In this paper, we propose a mobile agent infrastructure to support “Quality of Service” (QoS) parameters in multimedia content streaming. The infrastructure is able to face the issues concerning multimedia content transformation, in order to ensure that the client-side QoS is met. A Grid computing platform is exploited and content adaptation is performed through appropriate agents that are allocated as jobs and executed on Grid hosts. A location service is therefore devised and made available within the Grid system, which helps finding the hosts whose geographic position and network connections minimise the delays required to move the desired multimedia content from the storage to the processing site, and (after suitable transcoding) from this to the requesting client.

The computational grid is a new parallel and distributed computing paradigm that provides resources for large scientific computing applications. Many researchers have been proposed numerous scheduling and load balancing techniques for locally distributed multiprocessor systems. However, they suffer from significant deficiencies when extended to a grid environment. Computational grids have the potential for solving large-scale scientific computing applications. Abstract. The Agent in Grid (AiG) project attempts to integrate the concept of the Grid and an agent-based system to facilitate efficient resource management in the Grid. In this paper, we present preliminary considerations concerning multiple equivalent simultaneous offers strategy that can be used in the Service Level Agreement (SLA) negotiations. These negotiations are the key part of the main use case scenarios within the AiG project. In this context, first, we describe the AiG system. Second, we introduce the simultaneous offer strategy, as a mechanism known from economy, and suggest an approach for using it in the AiG negotiations.

The Agents in Grid project is devoted to the de-velopment of an agent-based intelligent high-level Grid middleware. In the proposed system, all data process-ing is ontology-driven, and initially was based on an in-house developed mini-ontology of the Grid. Our recent analysis has indicated that we should adapt and utilize the Grid ontology developed within the framework of the CoreGRID project. This note outlines how we have modified and extended the CoreGRID ontology to fulfill the needs of our approach
