Community notification text[edit]

  • EN:On April 2, the «Science Photo Competition 2022» started, traditionally the photo marathon is being held jointly with the Nauka television channel, it will be interesting. We invite everyone who is interested in science and who is able to hold a camera in their hands. The rules of the contest are very simple, prizes have a place to be! Colleagues, to attract external participants, we proposed a banner of the competition through CentralNotice.

Discussion[edit]

  • Support Support The competition is now in its seventh year. The banner is very important because most photographers learn about the competition through it. JukoFF (talk) 19:49, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support The banner is very important so the most photographers will learn about the competition through it. Just 28 March 2022
  • Support Support The banner will draw attention to the competition. --HalanTul (talk) 02:57, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Symbol strong support vote.svg Strong support Certainly! An international competition that has been held annually since 2015. Thanks to the competitions, tens of thousands of unique photographs illustrate Wikipedia articles.--Ctac (talk) 08:51, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Oppose This competition is organized together with the "Nauka" TV channel, an offspring of VGTRK, the Russian state-owned broadcaster that has played pivotal role in advocating the ongoing military campaign in Ukraine. It's not the right time to advertise such a partner using the Central Notice. --Alexander (talk) 15:41, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support I think this is the most important contest, because it is most related to the core encyclopedia. And the Nauka TV is the best possible partner in Russia for this very important contest. It has absolutely nothing with politics, it's pure popular scientific channel, it's about knowledge, not about politics. Dr Bug (Vladimir V. Medeyko) 09:05, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have written evidence that the money received for this competition do not come from VGTRK? That they do not come from the Russian government? Can you share this evidence with the community? --Alexander (talk) 09:35, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Joint-Stock Company Nauka TV is owned mostly by Joint-Stock Company Digital Technologies (which is owned by VGTRK), so the ownership is indirect. Digital Tehcnnologies seems to be a self-financing company. However, I don't see why should I prove: even if there are some governmental money, it only for the good, because it means that these money will be spent on free knowledge, and therefore will NOT be spent on war. Dr Bug (Vladimir V. Medeyko) 12:24, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You can build a bridge and comfort yourself with the fact that the money is spent for the bridge, not for building tanks, but it won't take long before tanks will drive over this bridge. -- Alexander (talk) 14:07, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And even if your money is from some other, non-governmental source, taxes paid from these prizes are a direct funding of the war. -- Alexander (talk) 14:45, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm absolutely convinced that free reliable neutral science-based knowledge prevents and stops wars. Wikimedia RU issued a detailed statement on this. Dr Bug (Vladimir V. Medeyko) 19:43, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Symbol strong support vote.svg Strong support. Wonderful contest promoting science, visualization of knowledge and Wikipedia among the citizens of Russia. --Frhdkazan (talk) 17:37, 2 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Danielly Campos Dias and Flávia Varella: I've created the campaign and banner. You can see a preview here. However, you can see that it doesn't look perfectly. Usually, we take a standard banner and adjust it with a logo on the left and a text in the center. A clickable photo like yours is not easy for most of us to implement. If you send us a link to the logo and also give us the texts (text fonts, text colors, etc.), we might be able to create an HTML which would be similar to the image. Since this will be a campaign also for the public, it should look better than now, in my opinion. What do you think? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 19:21, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Description - Call for participation to Wiki Loves Africa 2022.

So the banner is to promote the Wiki Loves Africa photo campaign. It is a call for participation.
It is pretty much unchanged compared to previous years. The contest is open for 2 months (by popular support). We run the banner only in Africa (though the contest is open everywhere). Every year, 90% or so of our participants are new (and some are retained there after !), so running the banner for IP addresses is very important as it serves as recruitment system for new participants. The contest runs over all African countries. In some countries (around 25), local teams will organize activities. They are very much in ask for the banners (both because it helps promote the contest in countries where wikipedia is not very well known) and because it makes them feel we take them seriously (and we do of course...).
I can expect we will collide half of February with Wiki Loves Folklore in African countries (media as well) and in March, we will collide with the Gender Gap campaigns. We’ll go with what is the best for everyone...

Discussion[edit]

Comment Comment WMHU has a signed agreement with the WMF about this banner campaign. The campaign will be between 15th February and 20th May, separated into four periods. Active campaign periods were consulted with the Online Fundraising Team of the WMF:

  • 15 to 21 February,
  • 15 to 21 March,
  • 28 April to 5 May and
  • 12 to 20 May.

I am a CN admin, and I can handle and administrate the campaign myself as I did in the previous years. Samat (talk) 20:17, 7 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @Samat for adding more details to the banner calendar item! Happy to see you are on top of all the admin around the campaign. Best, JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 06:37, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for preparing the calendar item for us already :) Let me know if you have any comment or advice on the campaign. Samat (talk) 12:11, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Since the community has been doing it annually and there are no previous issues with it, I've gone ahead and created the campaign (6 February to 6 March). ~ Nahid Talk 07:31, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for this @NahidSultan! I see you checked the box for anons, is this really necessary for an article writing campaign? Ciell (talk) 18:31, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, sure. One of the aims of this contest, as far as I know, is to attract new editors (awareness building basically) to Bangla Wikipedia by displaying the banner to anonymous users. I've had the chance to organize this contest a couple of times in the past. Most of the users participated in them were completely new, and during the prize giving ceremonies many of them mentioned that they actually came to know about the contest while they were reading articles on Bangla/English Wikipedia. ~ Nahid Talk 19:51, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for responding, and I see there is also a daily diet in place. Ciell (talk) 09:00, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell and NahidSultan: The banner will end on 2022-03-06, however the contest will run until 31 March 2022. If there isn't any technical or any other restrictions, I am requesting to extend the banner by 2 more week please. We recently got grants for this contest, The banner will help us to achieve our target. Thank you. আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 23:32, 2 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've extended the runtime, but with a lower diet: it will only show twice per 5 days instead of daily. I did a cookie reset as well, so people that might have discarded the banner previously will see it again. I hope this is a good compromise for you? Ciell (talk) 19:51, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell: 👍 Thank you. আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 23:07, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
