IATSE Calls Out Academy’s ‘Detrimental’ Decision to Reformat Oscars Telecast

IATSE Calls Out Academy’s ‘Detrimental’ Decision to Reformat Oscars Telecast
The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), the largest union representing behind-the-scenes workers in North America, has joined the growing number of critics expressing their disapproval of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to pre-record eight craft categories at the Oscars.

The eight categories to be aired retroactively as part of the awards broadcast on March 27 include film editing, make-up and hairstyling, production design, animated short and sound.

The statement released by IATSE President Matthew Loeb said, “By the nature of our jobs, behind the scenes, workers get little recognition as is, despite being the backbone of every production. The Academy Awards has been virtually the only venue where the very best on and off the big screen, above and below the line gather to honor each other’s incredible contributions through their crafts, inspiring millions who tune into the TV Broadcast in the process. Nicolas Cage Says He May Reunite With Francis Ford Coppola For ‘Megalopolis’ & ‘National Treasure 3’ Ain’t Happening
Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage might be finally transitioning away from strictly making smaller VOD features. Cage is playing himself in Lionsgate‘s meta-movie “The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent” and most recently was cast as Universal‘s newest incarnation of Count Dracula in the horror-comedy “Renfield” starring opposite Nicholas Hoult, which could mean he might continue that role in other Universal Monsters projects.

On The Waterfront Ending Explained: A Canary In A Coal Mine

On The Waterfront Ending Explained: A Canary In A Coal Mine
No actor in the history of cinema has had a greater impact on how to craft a performance than Marlon Brando. A student of legendary acting teacher Stella Adler, Brando broke open what a performer could do on screen in terms of spontaneity, speech, and internality. Initially criticized as a mumbler, he quickly became a lightning rod nobody could ignore, and now every actor who wants to go method fancies themself a new Marlon Brando, despite the fact that Brando was not a method actor (at least by the modern definition of the term). What helped rocket Brando to superstardom was he found a...

All the Details on Andrew Dominik’s Nc-17 Marilyn Monroe Biopic ‘Blonde,’ Starring Ana de Armas

All the Details on Andrew Dominik’s Nc-17 Marilyn Monroe Biopic ‘Blonde,’ Starring Ana de Armas
Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde” has already been attached to a few bombshells — and that’s not even counting its biopic subject, Marilyn Monroe.

Ana de Armas is set to play the “Some Like It Hot” star in the adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 book. The film stirred controversy surrounding de Armas’ casting as the iconic actress, as well as the material of Oates’ fictionalized telling of Monroe’s journey through a series of abusive relationships.

De Armas was announced to play Norma Jeane (Monroe’s real first name purposefully misspelled by Oates with an extra “e” at the end of Jean) in 2019, with the film originally set for a 2021 release. The Netflix film has since been pushed to a 2022 date.

Director Dominik selected de Armas after almost a decade of trying to cast the lead role. Jessica Chastain and Naomi Watts had reportedly been attached to the film, which was

How Will Packer Plans to Revive the Oscars: ‘This Is The Year’

How Will Packer Plans to Revive the Oscars: ‘This Is The Year’
Oscar producer Will Packer is in good spirits about producing this year’s 94th telecast. Like everyone globally, he’s spent the past two years having existential thoughts regarding his legacy, influence and priorities. But, a Hollywood outsider, Packer could be the right man for the job.

Packer and the Academy have received criticism following the announcement that eight categories, three shorts and five artisan, will be pre-recorded and edited into the live telecast for viewers at home. He says he has empathy and respect for the craftspeople. Still, he decided to treat the show as an entertainment property, saying: “I’m going to do the best I can to treat this show with the reverence and respect I think it deserves, but I’m also going to try to make an entertaining show.”

He compares creating a newly envisioned Oscars to the Super Bowl. “The NFL can never control who plays in the game,

How All About Eve Revived The Career Of A Hollywood Legend

How All About Eve Revived The Career Of A Hollywood Legend
While many movies have used the setting of show business as a backdrop for larger stories about greed or ambition, few have done it with the venom of "All About Eve." Joseph L. Mankiewicz' 1950 film about the cruel and unforgiving world of the theater tells the story of two women at odds with one another: one older, an established and beloved actress, the other younger, hungry for more and prepared to do whatever she can to get it. Despite the movie being a classic backstage melodrama, with backstabbing and massive egos, there's a certain pathos to its story of an older actress...

Mad Max: Fury Road's Car Chases Look So Good Because They Were So Dangerous To Shoot

Mad Max: Fury Road's Car Chases Look So Good Because They Were So Dangerous To Shoot
When "Mad Max: Fury Road" came along in 2015, it was a revelation. The fourth "Mad Max" film landed in theaters thirty years after "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome," the third entry in the series. In a year where the box office was dominated by blockbusters like "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "Jurassic World," and "Avengers: Age of Ultron," no one had any reason to suspect that this other old franchise would come roaring back to life with such great gusto, rather like a souped-up car engine in a post-apocalyptic desert "war party."

"Fury Road" received ten Academy Award nominations, including one for best picture...

Believe It Or Not, Face/Off Could Have Been Even Weirder

Believe It Or Not, Face/Off Could Have Been Even Weirder
"Face/Off" is undoubtedly a bonkers movie, right down to the premise itself. In the early stages of the film's development, however, the plot was even crazier, which means that, amazingly, the final theatrical version is toned down from its original plans. That doesn't make Nicolas Cage's psychopathic performance as Castor Roy, or the face transplant surgical procedure, or the highly improbably but absolutely awesome action sequences any less admirably insane, of course. It just means that screenwriters have to aim high if they have any hope of seeing at least a portion of their most outlandish ideas make it to the screen.

Director John...

Coda,” directed by Sian Heder, made history as the biggest Sundance acquisition ever, courtesy of Apple, which picked it up for $25 million. The film is nominated for three Academy Awards — Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Kotsur.

Building The Hobbiton Set For Lord Of The Rings Was A Massive Undertaking

Building The Hobbiton Set For Lord Of The Rings Was A Massive Undertaking
If you spend any time at all on Instagram, there's no doubt you've stumbled across cottagecore at some point. Images usually boast flowy, linen dresses and dried flowers hanging in bunches from wooden rafters. It's a vibe that is meant to capture the delicacy and coziness of living in a small cabin in the woods. Those who abide by the cottagecore lifestyle probably like things like beekeeping and hand-sewing their own quilts and bloomers. Their idea of a good time is spending the afternoon wading waist deep into the nearest creek or lying lazily on the shore reading poetry under the shade...

The Offer Trailer: See The Story About The Greatest Movie Almost Never Made
Before we go any further, let's all be grateful for the fact that I had just enough restraint to avoid filling this entire article with nothing more than pinched finger emojis or nonstop "House of Gucci" references, simply because of the Italian-ness of it all. Or maybe not doing so was an extreme tactical error on my part. I'm happy to accept any and all judgments for my actions.

With that out of the way, you're probably here for some actual news. Well, you may remember that Paramount first announced their plans to develop a new series about the making of "The Godfather" over a...

The 15 Best Horror Movies From Black Directors

The 15 Best Horror Movies From Black Directors
"We've always loved horror, it's just that horror, unfortunately, hasn't always loved us," author and film historian Tananarive Due says in the opening to Shudder's extensive "Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror." The sweeping deep-dive confronts the truth about Black representation in horror, spanning from the infamous 1915 film "The Birth of a Nation" through cinematic beacons such as "The Night of the Living Dead" to modern fare like Jordan Peele's "Get Out." Based on Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman's 2011 book of the same name, the documentary (directed by Xavier Burgin) is a deeply insightful and engaging document, rendering the Black voice as forever vital to the genre.
