The British citizenship ceremony marks the legal endpoint of the naturalisation process. While the citizenship ceremony may be a celebration, it can also be a final examination. Using an ethnographically-informed case study, this article follows one candidate, ‘W’, through the naturalisation process in the UK. W is a migrant Yemeni at the end of the naturalisation process. Bakhtin’s notion of “ideological becoming” offers an analytic orientation into how competing discourses may operate. This article focuses on the role of what Bakhtin describes as “authoritative discourse” in the citizenship ceremony, in particular the Oath/Affirmation of Allegiance which citizenship candidates are required to recite. Success in the ceremony is dependent on how individuals negotiate authoritative discourse. This study follows W and highlights the complexities and negotiations of authoritative discourse in a citizenship ceremony.

Background Neuroinflammation plays a prominent role in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), both in pathogenesis and disease progression. It has been shown that TLR/MYD88 signaling is involved in the chronic low-grade sterile inflammation associated with AD. Several studies have evidenced high levels of MYD88 in the brain of patients and animal models of AD, but no study has assessed so far its levels in blood. Methods In this study we evaluated the blood mRNA levels of MYD88 in a mouse model of AD, and also the putative effect of Rivastigmine treatment on MYD88 expression. Twenty-eight transgenic APP/TAU mice (AT) and twenty-two control C57/BL6j mice (WT) were included in this study, out of which five transgenic AT and five WT mice were treated with Rivastigmine. It has been widely recognized that access to mental health treatment is imperative to address current and long-term stressors for children and parents during COVID-19. Internet-delivered Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (iPCIT, previously referred to as I-PCIT) is a strong model for remote service delivery during social distancing restrictions due to its empirical base. However, this treatment modality was not widely implemented before COVID-19, likely due to barriers to providing telehealth services. This mixed methods study conducted a follow-up survey to gather therapist experiences (N = 223) in delivering iPCIT during COVID-19, including qualitative data on the benefits and challenges to delivering iPCIT. The vast majority of therapists (82%) indicated that they transitioned to deliver PCIT via telehealth in response to COVID-19. ObjectiveTo examine the role of genes identified through genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of Parkinson disease (PD) in the risk of isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD).MethodsWe fully sequenced 25 genes previously identified in GWASs of PD in a total of 1,039 patients with iRBD and 1,852 controls. The role of rare heterozygous variants in these genes was examined with burden tests. The contribution of biallelic variants was further tested. To examine the potential effect of rare nonsynonymous BST1 variants on the protein structure, we performed in silico structural analysis. Parkinson's disease (PD) and diabetes mellitus share similar pathophysiological characteristics, genetic and environmental factors. It has been reported that people with diabetes mellitus appear to have a remarkable higher incidence of PD than age matched non diabetic individuals. Evidences suggest that use of antidiabetic glitazone is associated with a diminished risk of PD incidence in patients with diabetes. This study examined the effect of lobeglitazone, a member of thiazolidinedione class, in rat model of Parkinson's disease with diabetes co-morbidity. Rats received either rotenone and/or a combination of streptozocin and a high calorie diet for disease induction and they were treated with different doses of lobeglitazone or its vehicle. Behavioral tests comprising rotarod, bar test and rearing test were conducted to evaluate the motor function. Changes in the level tyrosine hydroxylase, TNF-α and NF-κB were analyzed using ELISA. In the same brain regions the possible changes in PPAR-γ receptor level were evaluated. Findings showed that although lobeglitazone tends to reverse the effect of rotenone in animals with diabetes, it was just able to prevent partly the motor defect in rearing test. Furthermore, lobeglitazone (1 mg/kg) reversed, in substantia nigra and striatum, the changes in tyrosine hydroxylase, TNF-α, NF-κB and PPAR-γ receptor content induced by rotenone in rats with diabetic condition. Although other preclinical studies are needed, these findings suggest that lobeglitazone is a promising neuroprotective candidate for clinical trials for PD patients with diabetes co-morbidity.

We have studied a patient, CZ, with contralateral visual extinction due to a large ischaemic frontal-parietal-temporal lesion in the right hemisphere. We found that manipulation of intensity of the visual stimulus had little effect while an increase in eccentricity substantially increased extinction rate. An important factor was represented by the hemifield of stimulus presentation: when double stimuli were presented to the contralesional (left) hemifield, the leftmost stimulus was consistently extinguished while when stimuli were presented to the ipsilesional (right) hemifield, extinction was absent. Such effect was specific to hemifield rather than to head- and trunk-defined hemispace. Manipulation of response-related variables affected extinction to a large extent: In particular, the use of nonverbal responses diminished extinction considerably. This suggests that an important component of extinction may be represented by an impaired access of visual information to the left hemisphere. Finally, the RT results confirmed previous evidence of an ipsilesional attentional bias favouring the rightmost stimuli both in the contralesional and in the ipsilesional hemifield.

BACKGROUND Considering the increasing evidence that disease-modifying treatments for Alzheimer's disease (AD) must be administered early in the disease course, the development of diagnostic tools capable of accurately identifying AD at early disease stages has become a crucial target. In this view, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has become an effective tool to discriminate between different forms of neurodegenerative dementia. OBJECTIVE To determine whether a TMS multi-paradigm approach can be used to correctly identify mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to AD (AD MCI). METHODS A sample of 69 subjects with MCI were included and classified as AD MCI or MCI unlikely due to AD (non-AD MCI) based on 1) extensive neurological and neuropsychological evaluation, 2) MRI imaging, and 3) cerebrospinal fluid analysis or/and amyloid PET imaging. A paired-pulse TMS multi-paradigm approach assessing short interval intracortical inhibition-facilitation (SICI-ICF), dependent on GABAergic and glutamatergic intracortical circuits, respectively, and short latency afferent inhibition (SAI), dependent on cholinergic circuits, was performed. RESULTS We observed a significant impairment of SAI and unimpaired SICI and ICF in AD MCI as compared to non-AD MCI. According to ROC curve analysis, the SICI-ICF / SAI index differentiated AD MCI from non-AD MCI with a specificity of 87.9% and a sensitivity of 94.4%. CONCLUSIONS The assessment of intracortical connectivity with TMS could aid in the characterization of MCI subtypes, correctly identifying AD pathophysiology. TMS can be proposed as an adjunctive, non-invasive, inexpensive, and time-saving screening tool in MCI differential diagnosis.

Introduction Delirium and sarcopenia are common, although underdiagnosed, geriatric syndromes. Several pathological mechanisms can link delirium and low skeletal muscle mass, but few studies have investigated their association. We aimed to investigate (1) the association between delirium and low skeletal muscle mass and (2) the possible role of calf circumference mass in finding cases with delirium. Methods The analyses were conducted employing the cross-sectional “Delirium Day” initiative, on patient 65 years and older admitted to acute hospital medical wards, emergency departments, rehabilitation wards, nursing homes and hospices in Italy in 2017. Mutations in superoxide dismutase (SOD1) cause amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease characterized by loss of motor neurons and accompanied by accumulation of misfolded SOD1 onto the cytoplasmic faces of intracellular organelles, including mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Using inhibition of misfolded SOD1 deposition onto mitochondria as an assay, a chaperone activity abundant in nonneuronal tissues is now purified and identified to be the multifunctional macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), whose activities include an ATP-independent protein folding chaperone. Purified MIF is shown to directly inhibit mutant SOD1 misfolding. Elevating MIF in neuronal cells suppresses accumulation of misfolded SOD1 and its association with mitochondria and the ER and extends survival of mutant SOD1-expressing motor neurons. Recent studies show that the popularity of the pairs trading strategy has been growing and it may pose a problem as the opportunities to trade become much smaller. Therefore, the optimization of pairs trading strategy has gained widespread attention among high-frequency traders. In this paper, using reinforcement learning, we examine the optimum level of pairs trading specifications over time. More specifically, the reinforcement learning agent chooses the optimum level of parameters of pairs trading to maximize the objective function. Results are obtained by applying a combination of the reinforcement learning method and cointegration approach. We find that boosting pairs trading specifications by using the proposed approach significantly overperform the previous methods. Empirical results based on the comprehensive intraday data which are obtained from S&P500 constituent stocks confirm the efficiently of our proposed method.
