Seesag Ensemble head-scratcher: ‘Glass Onion’ could shake up important precursor race

In our odds “Everything Everywhere” and “The Fabelmans” are the two top contenders for best ensemble cast. They’re both family-centered stories, which would follow in the footsteps of past SAG champs like “The Birdcage,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” and reigning champion “Coda.” Both films are expected to reap three individual acting bids. And “Everything” has the potential to do even better than that: the award for best stunt ensemble isn’t in our predictions center for the nominations round,

The Goldbergs Season 10 Guest Star To Recreate Iconic '80s Movie Moment

The Goldbergs Season 10 Guest Star To Recreate Iconic '80s Movie Moment
Recurring guest star Steve Guttenberg will recreate an iconic moment from Three Men and a Baby in an upcoming episode of The Goldbergs season 10. Based on Adam F. Goldberg’s childhood, the sitcom stars a fictionalized version of the creator’s family and chronicles their lives in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania during the 1980s. The Goldbergs is currently halfway through season 10 and is returning to air after a month hiatus with a nostalgic treat for those who grew up in the '80s.

Guttenberg is set to help recreate an iconic scene from 1987’s Three Men and a Baby in The Goldbergs season 10, as teased by TVInsider. Guttenberg will reprise his role in the midseason premiere “Blade Runner: The Musical” as Dr. Katman, in his first appearance since season 8. The moment pays homage to Guttenberg’s famous role by recreating the “Goodnight Sweetheart” song which he, Ted Danson, and Tom Selleck jointly

The Party Report: Awards Contenders Flock to Palm Springs, St. Barths Heats Up for Unicef Gala
After a quiet time in Hollywood and elsewhere as celebrities and their families celebrated Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and even Festivus, the New Year has arrived with some big bangs, especially at the 34th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala, which has traditionally been the first stop on the party season ride into the Oscars (on March 12 this year). Earlier, the Rose Bowl Parade brought out “Yellowstone” breakout star and country singer Lainey Wilson riding on Louisiana’s award-winning float; and lots of beautiful people flocked to St. Barths for a Caribbean vacation and to help a worthy cause, too, at the LuisaViaRoma for Unicef Winter Gala.

Oscar Experts Typing: Breaking down the chaotic BAFTA longlists and why Spielberg’s snub isn’t that surprising
Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we dissect the BAFTA longlists.

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we’ve got some new data points to discuss! Earlier today, BAFTA released its longlists and further buttressed the Best Picture bona fides for “All Quiet on the Western Front.” The Netflix war drama led all contenders with 15 overall mentions, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Cinematography and more. If you’ll allow me to put on my best Richard Dreyfuss voice, this means something. This is important. I was reluctant after the Oscar shortlists were released to jump on the “All Quiet” bandwagon, but now I’m fully aboard: I’ve got it in for Best Picture and I don’t think it’s

Cate Blanchett Reveals Jamie Lee Curtis Flashed Her in ‘Bra and Knickers’ Before Palm Springs Gala

Cate Blanchett Reveals Jamie Lee Curtis Flashed Her in ‘Bra and Knickers’ Before Palm Springs Gala
Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis drove to the Palm Springs Film Festival Gala together, and while Curtis presented Blanchett with the Desert Palm Achievement Award for her performance in “Tár,” the two delighted the audience with banter about who’s the better driver. But Blanchett brought the energy up to a fever pitch when she revealed that prior to their drive, Curtis had repacked her bag and came “out in her bra and knickers.”

“We had this lengthy conversation,” Blanchett recalled at the top of her speech. “A discussion about whether I should get into pajamas before driving back tonight. Meanwhile, she’s telling me this about what I should wear, and she comes out in her bra and knickers. This is why we nearly missed the tonight’s event.”

The two worked together on Eli Roth’s upcoming feature “Borderlands,” which Blanchett filmed prior to beginning Todd Field’s psychological drama.

Golden Globe predictions: Could ‘Elvis’ pull a ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and win Best Picture?

Golden Globe predictions: Could ‘Elvis’ pull a ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and win Best Picture?
The Golden Globes love musicals. They’ve demonstrated that they’re especially fond of music biopics. This year they nominated “Elvis” three times, but might we be underestimating it for the top prize? “The Fabelmans” currently has the lead in our racetrack odds, but some of our elite awards pundits say the King will take the crown.

The Fabelmans” leads our forecasts for Best Film Drama with leading odds of 17/5 based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. As of this writing “Elvis” is tied with “Avatar: The Way of Water” in second place with 4/1 odds. Indeed, “The Fabelmans” has the most nominations (five) out of any film in the category, including important bids for Best Director (Steven Spielberg) and Best Screenplay (Spielberg and Tony Kushner). However, the film did show signs of vulnerability: both Paul Dano and Judd Hirsch were snubbed for Best Supporting Actor.

2023 Oscars: Best Supporting Actor Predictions

2023 Oscars: Best Supporting Actor Predictions
As with leading men, the winner of Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars is usually one of the more seasoned competitors. Of the 86 winners to date, only four Best Supporting Actor champs were in their 20s and just 15 were thirtysomething, including 2021 champ Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Messiah”). The 2022 winner, Troy Kostur, was 53 when he prevailed for “Coda.” He joined 14 previous winners who were in their 50s when they took home the trophy. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Supporting Actor predictions.)

Eleven more men were in their 60s when they won Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards. For eight fellows, it took till they were in their 70s to win while two (George Burns for “The Sunshine Boys” and Christopher Plummer for “Beginners”) were north of 80 when they took home their only Oscars.

At the 2019 Academy Awards, Mahershala Ali claimed the prize for “Green Book.” He

Oscar Experts Typing: Will Best Supporting Actor really double up on co-star nominees?
Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we look at Best Supporting Actor, which has a steamrolling frontrunner but a far-from-locked field.

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s our final typing of the year, so what better time to consider the men of the Best Supporting Actor race one last time — potentially one last time until March? I kid, but I don’t: Not even Cate Blanchett feels as inevitable as Ke Huy Quan, whose performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” coupled with an irresistible comeback narrative has him well out in front in this race. Quan is like Troy Kotsur and Kodi Smit-McPhee combined. Quan has won 22 precursor awards so far, including victories from both critics groups in New York and Los Angeles, as well

Dual supporting nominations at the Oscars: A hint to what’s leading for Best Picture?

Dual supporting nominations at the Oscars: A hint to what’s leading for Best Picture?
There was a time when a movie getting a single acting nomination at the Oscars was a pretty big deal. As ensemble casts became more commonplace in movies with increasingly impressive performances across the board, we began to see more movies getting multiple supporting nominations. For the longest of times, this was something we might see in the Best Supporting Actress category, but in recent years, we’ve seen that phenomenon shift over to the Best Supporting Actor category, as well.

SEEIs ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ unbeatable for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars?

It’s so commonplace for women that we can go all the way back to 1939 for the first time two actresses were nominated in the supporting category, which was Hattie McDaniel and Olivia de Haviland for “Gone with the Wind.” (McDaniel won.) It has happened 28 times since then out of 94 Oscar ceremonies, although 1963 was the

Why the Academy Needs to Give ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ the Best Picture Oscar

Why the Academy Needs to Give ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ the Best Picture Oscar
It probably won’t happen. It probably shouldn’t happen. But a lot of people — myself included — are really hoping it happens. Because the only way for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to save this year’s Oscars is to make sure the Best Picture award goes to “Top Gun: Maverick.”

No, it wasn’t the best movie released in 2022, or even the best action movie. But “Top Gun” did accomplish something this year that definitely deserves some sort of award: It defibrillated a near-dead theatrical industry.

When it came out last May, many Americans were still wearing masks and movie theaters were still almost entirely empty. It looked at the time as if Covid had dealt such a lethal blow to the film business that the audience, which had been safely tucked at home with Netflix for two years, would never return.

But then Tom Cruise

Steven Spielberg and ‘The Fabelmans’ Production Team on Telling a Deeply Personal Story With Trusted Collaborators

Steven Spielberg and ‘The Fabelmans’ Production Team on Telling a Deeply Personal Story With Trusted Collaborators
Steven Spielberg wanted to tell a very personal story with “The Fabelmans,” one that was going to leave the Oscar-winning director vulnerable and raw while shooting the semi-autobiographical look at his childhood as a movie-loving kid in Arizona and Northern California. It helped, Spielberg admits, that most of the team on “The Fablemans” were the veterans of several of the filmmaker’s past productions, with some collaborators like editor Michael Kahn beginning their association as far back as 1977’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

“It was great having so many friends, and colleagues, and people who speak with each other and certainly to me in a kind of shorthand,” Spielberg said during a panel on “The Fabelmans” for Variety’s FYC Fest. “And it made making this movie so much easier than it would’ve been. It’s much easier for me to cry in front of friends than

Showing Up trailer: Michelle Williams embraces art, people, and her inner demons in Kelly Reichardt’s new comedic drama
Creativity comes in fits and starts, but stagnation can often feel like death to someone whose livelihood survives on their art output. For some, art pays the bills, and when you’re not creating, it means the difference between heat in your house and eating ramen for dinner for the sixth night in a row. In A24‘s Showing Up trailer, Lizzy (Michelle Williams) is a sculptor preparing to open her new show, but she’ll have to manage her creative life and daily drama first.

Kelly Reichardt directs Showing Up from a script she co-wrote with Jonathan Raymond. The film presents a funny portrait of art and craft, with Lizzy’s family and friends adding to her stress, challenging her patience, and questioning every move she makes. Joining Williams for Reichardt’s dramatic comedy are Hong Chau, Andre Benjamin, Maryann Plunkett, John Magaro, James Le Gros, and Judd Hirsch.

‘Entertainment Tonight’s’ Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner to Host 2023 Palm Springs International Film Awards (Exclusive)
Entertainment Tonight’s” Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner will host the Palm Springs International Film Festival Film Awards gala on Jan. 5.

The Emmy-winning duo — who also hosted the Daytime Emmys earlier this year — take over emcee duties at the Palm Springs gala from former “Et” anchor Mary Hart.

“The Palm Springs International Film Awards has partnered with ‘Entertainment Tonight’ since 2004, and over those 18 years, Mary Hart has done an amazing job as host of the show,” said Psiff chairman Harold Matzner in a statement. “Due to her schedule, she is not able to be with us this year and she will be missed.”

Matzner continued: “We are very excited to continue our partnership with ‘Et’ having both of their on-air anchors Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner join us as co-hosts. They will have big shoes to fill, but I know they will make this a fun and memorable evening!”

Steven Spielberg Gave Judd Hirsch A Blank Canvas To Create Uncle Boris In The Fabelmans

Steven Spielberg Gave Judd Hirsch A Blank Canvas To Create Uncle Boris In The Fabelmans
About a third of the way into Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical film "The Fabelmans," the titular family is visited by the wild and extroverted Uncle Boris, played by the legendary Judd Hirsch. Boris is the uncle of the family matriarch Mitzi (Michelle Williams), and the two seem to share a similar passion for the arts and for theatricality. There is some trepidation among the Fabelmans as to whether or not Boris should be allowed to interact with the teenage Sammy (Gabriel Labelle), the Spielberg stand-in who has already become properly obsessed with filmmaking. Sammy's dad (Paul Dano) feels that exposure to a wild, artistic soul like Boris -- once a professional lion tamer -- will further push his son down the path of artistry, when a career in engineering would likely be easier and more lucrative.

That night, Boris shares a bedroom with Sammy, and he goes on a wild
