It’s a familiar tale. A passing truck flings a pebble and THWHACK, a fresh windshield crater is born. That unsightly chip can spawn spreading cracks that will ruin a windshield over time. Professional repair or replacement can cost hundreds of dollars but, if the chip is small, there are more affordable and less complex solutions.
Windshield repair kits use epoxy resin to fill, seal and stabilize minor damage. They work best on bullseyes, chips, and stars that measure one inch or less in diameter. Drivers should repair a damaged windshield as soon as possible. Road dirt can work its way into microscopic cracks surrounding the chip and prevent the epoxy from adhering efficiently, and temperature changes can cause the chip to further fracture the glass. If cracks have already appeared, windshield replacement may be an inevitability.
There aren’t too many techniques for filling and stabilizing glass chips, so these kits differ primarily in the epoxy injection method. Many include a vacuum syringe to remove dirt and moisture, making for a more effective repair. The end result may not be quite as good as new, but the low cost of repair kits makes them a worthwhile option for drivers on a budget. Here are our top five windshield chip repair kits.
