Shop lifts for home garages raise a car off the ground two to eight feet, allowing for maintenance, repairs and detailing.

We evaluated a sampling of portable or scissors jacks that slide under the car and lift it off the ground enough to do work underneath, two-post lifts that raise the vehicle close to the ceiling and allow for standing work on tires and brakes, and four-post lifts meant to store one car safely over another or for repair work.

We examined the lift features including lifting height and weight, portability, safety features to protect the user and the vehicle when being raised, power requirements. We also compared and aggregated the findings of critics and lift users.

Our choices reflect different users’ needs for affordability versus lifting height and capacity, and access to tires, wheels and brakes for routine service, in some cases by adding a set of adapters to raise the wheels and tires off the ramps of four-post lifts. The lifts we evaluated covered a range of prices from about $2,000 to $4,500.

Are home car lifts safe?

Yes, provided all manufacturer instructions and safety tips are followed, always keeping in mind the multi-ton vehicle above you. Inspect lift frequently for stress cracks, cable wear (where applicable), and proper pump fluid amounts. Always use lift points outlined in the vehicle owner’s manual.

Can you use the space under a two-post lift for additional storage?

No, this is not recommended for safety reasons. Four-post models are the only option.

What’s the difference between two-post and four-post lifts?

Two-post lifts have four adjustable arms that slide under the four points where you jack up the car. The vehicle’s underbody is fully serviceable. Vehicles on four-post lifts rest on their wheels/tires, so if you want to service the wheels, brakes or suspension, order a set of telescoping jack trays.

Are there portable two-post lifts?

BendPak sells the MaxJax portable two-post lift ($2,440). A floor-strength analysis must be completed, and concrete floor anchors installed. To use, wheel the two lift arms into place, securely bolt them to the concrete anchors, and connect the power supply.

Are there extra costs?
