Our Take

N/A

The Sierra has lots of virtues, including a trick multi-function tailgate, an excellent towing safety suite and plenty of room. It’s also good looking, with the off-road themed AT4 a particular style standout. Its available 6.2-liter V8 and 3.0-liter diesel six also give good performance and hauling capability. On the other hand, the Sierra’s top trims don’t seem quite as premium as billed, and many of the Truck’s features are shared with its less-expensive sibling, the Chevy Silverado, which also has a higher max tow rating.

Pros

  • Good powertrain choices are made even better for 2022
  • Major upgrades in standard safety features
  • Vastly improved interior in all but work-truck grade
  • Excellent optional powertrains
  • Multi-function tailgate
  • Handsome styling

Cons

  • Not as refined as Ford or Ram, and loses out to Ford on brawn
  • Rough ride over broken pavement
  • Many desirable features still cost extra
  • Premium interior not as premium as priced
  • Pricier than Silverado
  • Rough ride

Styling

N/A

Styling

The Sierra’s front end features a grille large enough to be visible from space, but it’s a handsome design, and more visually pleasing than the scowling look of its Silverado Sister. The Sierra looks particularly good in Elevation and AT4 forms, with painted bumpers and a body kit, and on the latter a 2-inch lift.

Performance

N/A

Performance

The Sierra offers five different powerplants, but two are real standouts, the 3.0-liter diesel six-cylinder and the 6.2-liter V8. The 6.2 offers a best-in-class 420 horsepower, good for lots of fun. The diesel matches the 6.2 liter’s torque figures but returns excellent fuel economy for a big truck. The Sierra max tow rating is lower than its domestic competitors, which is a demerit, as is its relatively harsh ride.

comfort & convenience

N/A

comfort & convenience

The Sierra’s interior is comfortable, user-friendly and roomy, but not a particularly remarkable design, which is a little disappointing on the top-spec Denali. GMC’s MultiPro tailgate is inventive and useful, and the trailer monitoring systems a handy addition.

Fuel Economy

N/A

Fuel Economy

You can’t expect great gas mileage from full-size pickups, and most of the Sierra’s powertrain choices return slightly below average fuel economy for the class, in the 15-17 mpg range for combined ratings. The exception is the thrifty 3.0-liter diesel, which even in heavier four-wheel drive form returns 22 mpg city, 26 highway, and 24 mpg combined, a little above average for the class.

Safety

N/A

Safety

The Sierra earned a four-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and generally good scores in evaluations by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It offers many available driver-assist systems, but all of them are extra-cost additions, which costs it quite a few points in our evaluation. The ProGrade trailering system is useful and easy to use.
