Tom Holland’s ‘Uncharted’ Tops Box Office Charts With $44 Million Debut

Tom Holland’s ‘Uncharted’ Tops Box Office Charts With $44 Million Debut
Sony’s long-in-the-works video game adaptation “Uncharted” collected $44.1 million between Friday and Sunday, enough to lead domestic box office charts and solidify Tom Holland’s star power.

The big-budget action adventure has been positioned as a key test of Holland’s bankability outside of his blockbuster success as Spider-Man. “Uncharted” has received mixed reviews at best, so it’s safe to assume the 25-year-old British actor had a healthy hand in selling tickets. It also helps that “Uncharted” is rated PG-13 and based on an extremely popular video game series.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer, who previously returned for a “Zombieland” sequel after leading Tom Hardy’s “Venom” to box office glory, “Uncharted” is expected to earn $52 million from 4,275 North American theaters through the President’s Day holiday on Monday. It’s an impressive start for Covid times, but it doesn’t mean the film has an easy path to profitability.

Box Office: Tom Holland’s ‘Uncharted’ Plundering $45 Million in Holiday Weekend Debut

Box Office: Tom Holland’s ‘Uncharted’ Plundering $45 Million in Holiday Weekend Debut
Uncharted” is looking to climb to the top of the domestic box office in its opening weekend. Ruben Fleischer’s adventure film is projected to earn $45 million over the four-day Presidents’ Day weekend — a tally that would notch it as the biggest theatrical opening of 2022 so far.

Sony Pictures’ “Uncharted” earned $15.4 million on Friday from 4,275 locations, setting itself up for a No. 1 debut. The Tom Holland vehicle marks the box office’s biggest opening since the star’s last film, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which dominated the holiday season to become the third highest-grossing domestic film release in history.

After anchoring a Marvel trilogy, “Uncharted” is seen as a test of Holland’s box office appeal outside of spandex. The film marks his first starring role in a non-Marvel theatrical blockbuster, apart from last spring’s “Chaos Walking,” which sat on Lionsgate’s shelf for years and hardly made any

‘All Creatures Great and Small’: Lockdown Writing and Great Dog Performance Create Perfect S2 Ending

‘All Creatures Great and Small’: Lockdown Writing and Great Dog Performance Create Perfect S2 Ending
On the list of things you theoretically shouldn’t do in a Christmas special, “a last-minute wedding cancellation” and “coming very close to killing off a beloved pet” are pretty high.

Yet, “All Creatures Great and Small” has done each in consecutive years and still delivered cozy, season-capping holiday episodes. It’s one of the show’s enduring charms that it can present such a happy atmosphere without skipping over some serious issues.

“We’re trying to find a story that’s heartwarming, but also the emotionally layered story for Christmas that sort of lifts you up,” series writer Ben Vanstone said, also acknowledging, “For me, there’s always a slight sadness associated with Christmas.”

That sadness was enhanced somewhat during the 2020 Christmas season when, like many during that time, Vanstone was unable to visit his family. Working during that time, he wrote a storyline for veterinarian protagonist James Herriot

Euphoria Season 2 Yearbook: The Play's The Thing

Euphoria Season 2 Yearbook: The Play's The Thing
It's showtime at East Highland High this week, and the myopic kids of "Euphoria" are finally seeing themselves from another perspective. Lexi's play takes over the entire seventh episode of the season, giving both the viewers and the characters clarity while shaking up the already-fragile dynamic of the show's central friend group.

By episode's end, Cassie is breathing ominously against the theater door window, looking like she may actually want to kill Lexi -- or Maddy? Aside from her and Nate's fight, though, this episode is mostly an enjoyable (if surprisingly late-in-the-season) break from the drama. Though she's certainly capable of getting serious, teen playwright Lexi's...

‘Euphoria’: Inside Lexi’s Spinning, Meta High School Play at the Center of Episode 7

‘Euphoria’: Inside Lexi’s Spinning, Meta High School Play at the Center of Episode 7
The HBO series “Euphoria” has become a cultural phenomenon thanks to its talented and charismatic ensemble cast, controversial attitudes toward teen sex and drug use, and trend-setting approach to fashion and makeup. All of that tends to obscure the show’s ground-breaking visual style, but that style is every bit as instrumental to the show’s success as Zendaya’s Emmy-winning performance as Rue. In finding the precise cinematic language to express Rue’s struggles with addiction and the roiling interior tensions of Rue’s classmates and parents, creator Sam Levinson (who directed all the episodes in Season 2) has turned “Euphoria” into essential viewing for anyone interested in seeing how far television can push visual and aural grammar. From the insanely creative needle drops to intricately choreographed Steadicam shots that would make “Magnolia”-era Paul Thomas Anderson jealous, “Euphoria” is the place to find 2022’s boldest and most inspiring filmmaking.

‘This Is What They Came Up With’: ‘Sex and the City’ Author Slams Reboot
The rollout of “And Just Like That…” has been rough, to say the least. HBO Max’s reboot of “Sex and the City was one of the streamer’s most anticipated new titles, but the series has been plagued with problems. The reboot debuted to abysmal reviews, with many fans lamenting the changes made to the beloved characters. But the real trouble began when Chris Noth, who plays Carrie’s longtime love interest Mr. Big, was accused of sexual assault by multiple women. He was ultimately edited out of the season finale, and he is not the only prominent cast member missing from the show. Kim Cattrall, known for playing Samantha Jones, did not participate in the revival due to her public feud with Sarah Jessica Parker.

The troubled show received more bad news this week when Candace Bushnell, who wrote the book of the same name that inspired “Sex and the City,

Spidey Star Tom Holland Does Double Duty As ‘Uncharted’ Takes The Top Spot With $51 Million Over President’s Day Weekend

Spidey Star Tom Holland Does Double Duty As ‘Uncharted’ Takes The Top Spot With $51 Million Over President’s Day Weekend
It’s official: the winter belongs to Tom Holland, the rest of us are just living in it. A mere ten weeks after the blockbuster launch of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the 25-year-old British actor (or should we now say “star”?) returned to the top of the box-office chart with his second out-of-the-gate smash of the season—the Indiana Jones-esque videogame adaptation Uncharted, which debuted over President’s Day weekend to a projected $51 million after Monday is factored in. Meanwhile, just a notch below in second place, Channing Tatum’s feel-good man-and-his-best-friend road movie, Dog, sunk its canines into an $18 million opening holiday frame while the less-cuddly four-legged flick, The Cursed, barely managed to nose its way into the top ten with a $1.9 million bow.

A prequel of sorts to Sony’s hit treasure-hunting videogame series, Uncharted was always expected to open in first place. Still, few expected the

Mad Men Creator Matthew Weiner's Latest TV Project Dropped By FX
It looks like FX will not be making a series with "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner after all. A project by the writer-director was first announced in 2020, but The Hollywood Reporter now confirms that the show will not go forward.

The new series, which was billed as a half-hour dramedy, received backlash upon its first announcement due to a prior sexual harassment allegation made against Weiner. Little is known about the series, but it was originally set to feature Weiner as a writer, director, and executive producer. It would have been Weiner's first project since the 2018 Amazon Prime limited series "The...

The Paddington Movies Are A (Very Polite) Takedown Of British Colonialism And Xenophobia
Ah, Paddington — the little Peruvian-British bear who single-handedly distributes serotonin to the masses every few years. Thankfully, it's been confirmed that the hotly anticipated "Paddington 3" will begin shooting by the end of 2022, meaning that the charming little bear is effectively en-route to warm our hearts (and stimulate our tear ducts) once more.

Though Paul King, who brilliantly helmed the first two "Paddington" installments, won't be involved in the forthcoming film, it's still safe to say that this news is exciting nonetheless. While we patiently await the latest tale of a marmalade-snarfing bear and the Brown family that takes him in...

Hacks Showrunners Tease What's Next For Jean Smart's Deborah Vance In Season 2
HBO Max's "Hacks" is one of the best new comedies on television, and the Emmy-winning series is set to return for a second season sometime in the (hopefully near) future. Now, in an extensive interview with Variety, the series' showrunners dropped hints about what legendary comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) will be up to when the show returns.

As a refresher, season 1 of "Hacks" ended with Deborah heading on tour for the first time in years after losing her Las Vegas residency. At her side is Ava (Hannah Einbinder), the disgraced young comedy writer who eventually bonded with Deborah despite...

Patricia Arquette ‘Struggled’ with ‘True Romance’ Character Being ‘So Supportive’ of Murder

Patricia Arquette ‘Struggled’ with ‘True Romance’ Character Being ‘So Supportive’ of Murder
Even after a three-decade Hollywood career that won her an Oscar and two Emmys, Patricia Arquette is still synonymous with “True Romance.” Her role as Alabama Whitman, a call girl who marries a client and ends up tangled in a web of crime after the newlyweds steal a shipment of cocaine, launched Arquette into the mainstream. The cult film’s pop culture status has only grown in the 29 years since its release, as it is now seen as an essential 1990s movie and a perennial inspiration for Instagram Halloween costumes.

The film’s content was shocking to some viewers at the time of its release, particularly due to its excessive violence and abundant pop culture references. Both are trademarks of screenwriter Quentin Tarantino, who was a new filmmaker at the time, having only directed “Reservoir Dogs” when “True Romance was released. While the film was directed by Tony Scott and
