Faith Initiative expands to help build bridges between community and HIV vaccine trials
SEATTLE (December 14, 2021) – While the rapid development of effective vaccines has helped combat the COVID-19 pandemic, key communities – especially people who are living with HIV – remain disproportionately impacted, and are at higher risk of severe disease and death. Finding an effective HIV vaccine is critically important, and to that end, the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) is launching an expanded Faith Initiative that will help advance the work of finding a cure.

Landmark COVID-19 vaccine trial in sub-Saharan Africa is the first to study the efficacy of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines in people living with HIV
SEATTLE/CAPE TOWN (Dec. 13, 2021) – A highly anticipated clinical trial in eight sub-Saharan countries is the first to specifically evaluate the efficacy of a COVID-19 vaccine in people living with HIV, including those with poorly controlled infections. It also is the first study to evaluate the efficacy of vaccines – in this case, Moderna mRNA-1273 – against the omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

SEATTLE – (Nov. 19, 2021) – Scott Hammer – physician, professor, educator, advisor, giant in the field of HIV therapy and prevention – passed away on November 17, 2021. Scott was a transcendent personality in both the HIV therapy and prevention fields, amplifying how his presence will be missed by everyone.

Formation of the COVID-19 Prevention Network (CoVPN) and official website launch
- The COVID-19 Prevention Network (CoVPN) was formed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the US National Institutes of Health to respond to the global pandemic. Using the infectious disease expertise of their existing research networks and global partners, NIAID has directed the networks to address the pressing need for vaccines and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against SARS-CoV-2. The HVTN is one of four NIAID-funded networks that constitute the CoVPN.
