Our Programme
The garment industry has, since the 1980s, been the largest exporter in Sri Lanka’s economy and employs a majority of women workers.
Better Work’s presence in Sri Lanka is currently through its Academy initiative. This work involves engaging one of the country’s large manufacturing groups (Orit Apparels Lanka) and its partner company Levi Strauss on Better Work Academy activities, centred mainly on improving workplace cooperation and worker-manager dialogue. The aim of the two-year partnership is to equip factory personnel to more effectively drive sustainable processes at each of their factories in the country. In addition, Better Work together with the ILO Colombo office is engaging the national constituents to develop a more robust means to address ongoing industry challenges in Sri Lanka’s textile and apparel industry. After some disruption in 2020 due to the pandemic, meetings are presently taking place with each constituent group to define collaboration opportunities and the scope of work. Better Work is currently recruiting a team and expects that the initial phase of work will be implemented in 2022.
