This award is intended to provide financial support to high school seniors who are residents of Delaware County or Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and who attend a public school, and who lost a parent. Eligible applicants are biological children, adopted children, and stepchildren. In order to apply, students must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or above in high school, have a financial need, and intend to pursue a 4-year degree at a college or university.NOTE: This award is available to students every four years, starting in 2019. The next award cycle will be available in 2023.

The $20,000 grant supports “exceptional individuals working in the area of serious mental illness,” including but not limited to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and paranoia (delusional disorder). The American Psychological Foundation provides financial support for innovative research and programs that enhance the power of psychology to elevate the human condition and advance human potential both now and in generations to come. The APF Alexander Gralnick Research Investigator Prize recognizes “exceptional individuals working in the area of serious mental illness,” including but not limited to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and paranoia (delusional disorder). The prize was established to honor the late Alexander Gralnick, MD, and to reflect the breadth of his accomplishments and contributions in the field of serious mental illness. Dr. Gralnick was a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and he received the American Psychiatric Association’s Distinguished Service Award and the Service to the Mentally Ill Award of the World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation. The prize aims to carry on Dr. Gralnick’s legacy by facilitating research by doctoral-level investigators in the area of serious mental illness. Goals: To encourage psychologists to assume a leadership role for psychology in the area of serious mental illness.To encourage the training of future psychologists to become leaders in this field.Advance understanding and treatment for those affected by such illnesses.
