Christmas Week Is Packed With ‘Matrix,’ ‘Sing 2,’ ‘King’s Man,’ & More, But ‘Spider-Man’ To Reign Supreme In Second Weekend

Christmas Week Is Packed With ‘Matrix,’ ‘Sing 2,’ ‘King’s Man,’ & More, But ‘Spider-Man’ To Reign Supreme In Second Weekend
This past weekend saw box office records getting shattered left and right as Spider-Man: No Way Home scored the second highest domestic opening of all time, taking the box office beyond merely being “good for the pandemic.” In one weekend it became the year’s top grossing film in the U.S. and the sixth highest worldwide, and by the end of the year it may very well become number one. While Spider-Man will continue to reign at the box office for a number of weeks (it just took home the third best Monday gross ever), the slew of films big and small opening this week promises something for everyone, and the Christmas frame won’t be entirely dominated by the webslinger.

The most hotly anticipated of the new releases is The Matrix Resurrections which opens Wednesday. The fourth film in the series, and the first in 19 years, is helmed

Sideshow's Wolverine Premium Format Statue Is Loaded With Berserker Rage [Exclusive]
Our pals at the always-incredible Sideshow Collectibles have provided us with a copy of their wicked cool Wolverine Premium Format Statue, part of their continuing X-Men lineup. At 15.5-inches tall this polystone work of art is not the most gargantuan thing the company has ever put out... in fact we just reviewed the 24.5-inch Cable Premium Format that would tower over this guy.

That's part of the point, though, as the character in the 616 Marvel comics is only supposed to be a scrappy five-foot-three. Thus, if you're collecting some of the other pieces in this line Logan should be perfectly proportional with his fellow teammates! With a limited...

Ralph Macchio Says A Jackie Chan Cameo Wouldn't Work In Cobra Kai, But A Hilary Swank Cameo Might
On the eve of its fourth season, people are still as crazy as ever for "Cobra Kai," the sequel continuation series based on "The Karate Kid" franchise that's set in what creators Jon Hurwitz, Josh Heald, and Hayden Schlossberg call the "Miyagi-verse." For the uninitiated, Mr. Miyagi is the legendary karate master from Okinawa, Japan played by Pat Morita, who famously mentored Daniel (Ralph Macchio) in "The Karate Kid." As "Cobra Kai" stars plenty of characters from the series, fans have been wondering if Jaden Smith or Jackie Chan...

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia's Finale Defines The Past, Present, And Future Of The Gang

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia's Finale Defines The Past, Present, And Future Of The Gang
It's all been leading to this. The gang from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" have dropped the penultimate and final episodes of their record-breaking fifteenth season, and they are some doozies.

"Always Sunny" season 15 has been all about interrogating the past and the gang's total inability to mature, and its final two episodes bring those themes to a head. In the first, "Dee Sinks in a Bog," Charlie's (Charlie Day) two dads fight for his love, while Dee (Kaitlin Olson) runs into an old foe from her past that makes things very tough on her. In the second, "The Gang Carries a Corpse...

The Real Reason Jessica Henwick Turned Down A Role In Shang-Chi
If you've already re-entered the Matrix this week, you know Jessica Henwick's Bugs is on her way to becoming a fan-favorite character within the sci-fi franchise. In "The Matrix Resurrections," blue-haired Bugs is a rebellious new leader who has a special connection to Neo (Keanu Reeves) and his simulation alter ego, Thomas Anderson. Henwick recently revealed that she almost starred in another blockbuster this year, Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," but turned down the role for a surprising reason.

In a career-defining moment, Henwick had to choose between the role of Bugs in "The Matrix Resurrections" and the role of...

Surf Ninjas & Ninja Turtles Actor Ernie Reyes Jr. Faces A New Fight: A Kidney Transplant
Many legendary figures in the realm of entertainment have universal appeal. Basically everyone acknowledges that people like Walt Disney, Lucille Ball, Jim Henson, Mary Shelley, Stan Lee, and Whoopi Goldberg can all be considered legends in their own right. But there are plenty of inspiring individuals out there, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes, that don't get recognized as often as they should. One such person is Ernie Reyes, Jr.

Probably best known for playing Keno, the ass-kicking pizza delivery boy in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze," many don't know that...

The Witcher's Depiction Of Infertility Helped Me Embrace My Own

The Witcher's Depiction Of Infertility Helped Me Embrace My Own
Fiction can be the lens that helps us process reality, but I never thought I would find catharsis in "The Witcher." I was hesitant to watch the series after being burned by the final season of "Game of Thrones," so it took me until November 2021 to check out season 1, just in time to watch the brand new second season. I expected to be entertained, but I couldn't have possibly anticipated just how much the series' depiction of infertility and surrogate parenthood would impact me. Watching Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and Geralt (Henry Cavill) contend with their inability to have children in their own ways helped me...

Jessica Henwick is no stranger to big franchises, having played the "Sand Snake" Nymeria Sand on "Game of Thrones," martial artist Colleen Wing on Marvel and Netflix's "Iron Fist," and Resistance fighter pilot Jess Testor in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Henwick can now be seen co-starring in "The Matrix Resurrections," a continuation of the mind-bending sci-fi film series. Henwick plays Bugs, a blue-haired hacker who plays a key role in the movie's story. However, before she decided to take the red pill and see how deep the rabbit hole goes, Henwick came close to giving up acting entirely.

Diversity Among 2022 Oscar Contenders Offers No Obvious Read on Progress

Diversity Among 2022 Oscar Contenders Offers No Obvious Read on Progress
It’s possible that someday Hollywood’s diversity problem will no longer exist. The “diversity sells” narrative is a tired song that’s been sung repeatedly over the last decade, yet progress has been inconsistent at best. Since 2015, social media movements like #OscarsSoWhite have forced the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to respond, introducing sweeping changes designed to significantly diversify its membership and governing bodies.

Yet, Hollywood’s pace of change is slow. The diversity across major categories among this year’s awards contenders, compared to previous seasons, is emblematic. Even the voters in the International Film category, where diversity might seem most intrinsic, came up short this year: despite as many as 10 legitimate contenders from the continent this year, yet again, Africa was shut out of the shortlist of 15.

To be sure, in the throes of a pandemic, uncertainty continues to weigh on industry decision-makers. Nonetheless, as

Clifton Collins, Jr. Went Above & Beyond For ‘Jockey’ [Interview]

Clifton Collins, Jr. Went Above & Beyond For ‘Jockey’ [Interview]
Some actors just do the work. They don’t care about the red carpets or potential commercial endorsements or campaigning for awards. We’re sure Clifton Collins, Jr. would enjoy all of those things, but he’s clearly not driven by it. And that’s one reason it’s gratifying to see him earn an Independent Spirit Award for his performance as a legendary horse rider in Clint Bentley’s “Jockey.” A film that has somehow landed more under the radar this awards season then it should have.

Why Yellowjackets' Portrayal Of A DIY Abortion Is So Important

Why Yellowjackets' Portrayal Of A DIY Abortion Is So Important
Spoilers ahead for episode 6 of "Yellowjackets." Content warning: discussions of reproductive autonomy and abortion.

For the last month, I've dedicated no less than 62% of my daily energy to screaming at the top of my lungs about how more people need to be watching "Yellowjackets" on Showtime, and it's not just because of the teenage cannibalism or abundance of queerness. In what has been an incredible year for television, "Yellowjackets" is still undoubtedly one of the best shows that arrived in 2021. But between its exclusive availability on Showtime, a channel that unfortunately not everyone has access to, and the fact it features a...

The King's Man Star Harris Dickinson Reveals What Soldiers Really Wore Under Their Kilts [Exclusive]
Director Matthew Vaughn's "The King's Man" is the third film in the ever-expanding "Kingsman" franchise, and the first spin-off and prequel. The film's star-studded cast includes Harris Dickinson, who plays Conrad Oxford, the son of Orlando Oxford (Ralph Fiennes), and Dickinson recently made time for an interview with /Film's Jeff Ewing, where he revealed that production on "The King's Man" saw him running through No Man's Land in a kilt.

The operative question is: What did soldiers in World War I (when "The King's Men" is set) really wear under their kilts? And when we say "under," that's not to say underneath, but...

Joan Didion Dies: Journalist, Novelist, and Screenwriter Was 87

Joan Didion Dies: Journalist, Novelist, and Screenwriter Was 87
Joan Didion, the journalist, novelist, and screenwriter of such films as the 1976 “A Star Is Born” died Thursday at her home in Manhattan at the age of 87. The New York Times reported that the cause was Parkinson’s disease.

Didion was born in Sacramento in 1934. The fifth-generation Californian found some of her most important material for her earliest writing in the culture and chaos of her home state. Her career began after she won a pair of writing contests put on by magazines during her time at Uc Berkeley. One of those wins led her to begin writing at Vogue.

She worked her way up to features editor at the fashion magazine. In 1963 she published her first novel, “Run River,” about the unraveling of a marriage that also serves as a commentary on the history of California.

Around that time and while living in New York she struck up a friendship,

Vincent D'Onofrio Wants To Continue Playing Kingpin In The MCU

Vincent D'Onofrio Wants To Continue Playing Kingpin In The MCU
(Note: This article includes spoilers for the season finale of "Hawkeye.")

Vincent D'Onofrio's ultra-strong crime lord Kingpin made his debut on "Hawkeye" last week, only to be quickly dispatched in the show's season finale. Speaking to ScreenRant, D'Onofrio says he's game to keep playing the bad guy in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. Still, D'Onofrio is pretty clear that his potential return to the Kingpin role is more a wish than a promise at this point.

"I hope he's not dead," D'Onofrio said, "But, I hoped that 'Daredevil' wouldn't end. So it's like that." When we last saw Kingpin, also known as Wilson Fisk,...

‘Close to Me’: Sundance Now’s Psychological Drama Is Well-Acted but Clings to Convention

‘Close to Me’: Sundance Now’s Psychological Drama Is Well-Acted but Clings to Convention
All is not as it seems in “Close to Me,” Sundance Now’s psychological drama about a married woman and mother who forgets the last year of her life following a traumatic event. A personal investigation into what caused it consumes all six episodes of the limited series, which stars Connie Nielsen and Christopher Eccleston in a middle-of-the-road effort that lands somewhere between the soap opera simplicity of a Lifetime movie and the kind of beautiful hellscape that Nielsen’s fellow Dane, filmmaker Lars von Trier, is known for writing. There’s even a sequence involving a dead canine scored to a rhyme about a copper fox, recalling the fabled “Chaos Reigns” moment in “Antichrist” (2009). If only “Close to Me” were as decidedly confrontational in its style and structure.

What prevents the series from being the haunting reverie it strive for is that it’s all-too-familiar — content with playing inside

Joan Didion, A Star Is Born Screenwriter And Legendary Author, Has Died At 87
Joan Didion, the prolific author, screenwriter, and journalist who co-wrote the screenplays for "A Star is Born," "True Confessions," and more has died at the age of 87 in her Manhattan home. As a journalist, Didion reported on counter-culture and social movements; along with writers like Truman Capote, Norman Mailer, and Hunter S. Thompson, she helped usher in the age of New Journalism, which focused on immersing the reporter in a story instead of remaining distanced. Much of Didion's reporting focused on her home state of California, a place that she shaped as surely as it shaped her.

According to Didion's publisher, Knopf (via...
