Ingredients in therapeutic goods

20 July 2021

Medicines and other therapeutic goods are usually made from a combination of different substances. These substances, or ingredients, are recorded in the ARTG entry for the good. It is important to use the correct name for each ingredient so that they can be accurately described and identified. The names of both active and excipient ingredients are visible in the public summaries of all medicines and biologicals on the ARTG.

We have processes to ensure that ingredients are named accurately and consistently. Our ingredient names align with those used overseas, where possible, to reduce confusion.

Names for ingredients used in therapeutic goods can be found in the Ingredient Tables in TGA Business services.

Some ingredients are made into combinations before they are included in a therapeutic good (for example flavours or fragrances). These types of ingredient mixes are known as proprietary ingredients as they are commonly referred to by their trade or proprietary name.
