COVID-19 treatments: Advertising compliance

20 August 2021

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is responsible for monitoring compliance with rules related to advertising therapeutic goods in Australia.

The advertising of products to consumers for the treatment of COVID-19 is prohibited in Australia without prior authorisation from the TGA, which is only issued in limited circumstances and where efficacy can be clearly established (e.g. disinfectants). The use of promotional materials to advertise COVID-19 vaccines has been authorised with conditions, to support the roll-out of the vaccines across Australia.

Any person, including businesses, advertising therapeutic goods to consumers in Australia, must comply with the requirements for advertising.

The TGA encourages people to report suspected non-compliant advertising via its advertising reporting form.

Educational information and resources about Australia's advertising rules for therapeutic goods can be found on the TGA website.

The TGA has published a warning to advertisers and consumers about illegal advertising relating to COVID-19.
