A
Taco Bell favorite of mine, the descriptively named
Mexican Pizza is Taco Bell's take on the pizza complete with a "pizza" sauce, melted cheese and toppings. A bit ironic since my local Taco Bell is also a /Pizza Hut where a Mexican Pizza can be had for
$2.79 whereas a more traditional Personal Pan Pizza will run a bit more.
The Mexican Pizza is a purely Taco Bell creation and I have never seen anything like it anywhere else. If pressed, I might describe it as a cross between a tostada and a quesadilla blended with an enchilada.
Or I might say, it features
two crispy flour tortillas (Taco Bell calls them "pizza shells" but I never will) joined together by a layer of seasoned ground beef and refried beans, topped with a "pizza sauce", a blend of mozzarella, Cheddar, and Monterey Jack cheeses, and diced tomatoes. The "pizza sauce" is, from what my tongue tells me, a red enchilada sauce.
The Mexican Pizza is served cut into slices like a traditional pizza. Everything goes very well together; the flour tortillas are crisp but have some give to them, the beans help mute the over-seasoned beef, and the cheese and sauce give it a bit of enchilada flavor. I love these things!
It's a dish with Mexican flavor that is distinctly Taco Bell, tasting altogether familiar but different.

I miss the days when taco bell put black olives on their pizza. I prefer to get just all beans instead of that mystery meat.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know they used to put black olives on their pizza. I guess they just don't use olives anymore in general.
ReplyDeleteHaha, the mystery meat is just ground USDA-inspected beef, not sure what the grade is though.
I love these things!
ReplyDeleteI wish they would go back to their old style meat mix. Remember when they first came out? The meat wasn't so sauce-ridden and wet. It was much better then!
ReplyDelete@Anon: I think more liquid means they end up using less meat maybe... so maybe a cost cutting measure.
