This classic Mexican cocktail is a refreshing iced blend of tequila, triple sec and lime juice. The glass is usually frosted around the rim with lime juice and salt to give a sharp and salty flavour to the drink. Triple sec is an orange flavoured liqueur sometimes called Curacao but you can use Cointreau or Grand Marnier instead. For a colourful blue Margarita use blue Curacao. Serve garnished with a wedge or slice of fresh lime or a twist of lime rind
Ingredients
- 25ml fresh lime juice
- Salt
- Ice cubes and crushed ice
- 35ml tequila
- 20ml triple sec
Method
Rub the rim of a martini cocktail glass or small tumbler with a little of the lime juice then dip lightly in the salt to frost. Place a couple of ice cubes in the glass.
Half fill a cocktail shaker with crushed ice and add the tequila, triple sec and remaining lime juice. Shake thoroughly then strain into the glass and serve.
Top tip for making Margarita
To make a frozen Margarita process the crushed iced, tequila, triple sec and lime juice in a blender until slushy. Pour into the glass (without the ice cubes).
