The following can be attributed on the record to John Kirby, Spokesperson:

This afternoon, Secretary Kerry delivered the U.S. National Statement at the UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants held during High-Level Week of the UN General Assembly in New York. During this meeting, UN Member States formally adopted the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, which outlined and affirmed key principles, including shared responsibility and international cooperation regarding refugees and migrants, and also contained commitments on protecting and assisting refugees and vulnerable migrants.

The declaration also included two appendices: one containing a comprehensive refugee response framework for execution immediately, and one establishing a road map for member states to elaborate a global compact on migration in 2018. The document also set out steps for Member States to develop and then adopt in 2018 a global compact for refugees and a global compact on safe, orderly, and regular migration.

The United States fully supported this Summit and believes today’s high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly is complementary to President Obama’s Leaders’ Summit on Refugees. Both summits are crucial to raising awareness of refugee and migration concerns, and both events are designed to harness the political will of Member States to address the global refugee and migration crises we are all facing.
