The late Kenneth A Gourlay, British ethnomusicologist, is known principally for his work among the Karamojong of Northeast Uganda. His collection of field recordings, made during the 1960s, features a range of genres including a large number of 'ox-songs'. In the 1970s, Gourlay worked in Nigeria and the collection includes a set of recordings found in 'A descriptive catalogue of recorded sound' compiled by Gourlay for the musicology section of the Centre for Nigerian Cultural Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. A complementary collection some of Gourlays notes, correspondence, papers and some recordings are to be found in the archives of Goldsmiths College, University of London.
