John Low spent most of his childhood living in Kenya during which time he developed a great love of music. This collection of field recordings can be divided into four sections: the ‘traditional series’ (1) and the ‘African guitar series’ (2) were both recorded during this first trip back to Africa, made from 1979-1981, in Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Tanzania; (3) recordings from Somalia in 1985-6, while Low was working for a development agency in Southern Somalia (Sablaale) with Northern Somalis who had been resettled due to drought; and (4) recordings made on the Sudanese coast in 1990 while he was working there for Oxfam. The collection also includes interviews with John Low describing his experiences on these various trips.
