National Plan to transition Australia's National COVID-19 Response

Opening back up in a careful and safe way is the highest priority of the Australian Government.

The modelling from the Doherty Institute has given Australia a clear path and targets for how to do that.

The targets in the National Plan were agreed by all the States and Territories at National Cabinet on 6 August 2021.

  • Severely immunocompromised Australians eligible for booster COVID-19 shots

Australians who are severely immunocompromised will be offered the option to receive a third COVID-19 vaccine dose to boost their protection against COVID-19.

  • Update from National Cabinet: 1 October

National Cabinet was briefed on plans to increase vaccination rates amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and people living with disabilities.

Following travel announcements earlier today, the Commonwealth will introduce an International COVID-19 Vaccine Certificate for outbound travellers to present at foreign borders and at the Australian border.

  • Next steps for international travel

Under Phase C of the National Plan, international travel is on track to reopen to fully vaccinated Australian travellers by November. States and territories will begin at different times given varying vaccination rates.

States and territories that are ready to do so will roll out 7-day home quarantine for Australian citizens and permanent residents fully vaccinated with a vaccine approved for use in Australia or ‘recognised’ by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), and 14-day managed quarantine for anyone not vaccinated or vaccinated with a vaccine not approved or recognised by the TGA.

Australians who want to travel overseas once restrictions are removed will be able to access an internationally recognised proof of vaccination document in the coming weeks to prove their vaccination status abroad.
