Tánaiste's statement on vote on the implementation of Prespa Agreement

The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Coveney T.D., has welcomed the vote in Parliament in Skopje on 19 October launching the process of constitutional amendments provided for in the agreement signed by the Hellenic Republic (Greece) and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in Prespa in June 2018:

“I wish to commend the courage of the parliamentarians who have seized this historic opportunity and I would urge them now to complete the constitutional amendment process without delay, paving the way for ratification of the agreement by the Greek Parliament.

“In giving effect to the agreement and changing the name of the state to ‘Republic of North Macedonia’, the parties will resolve a decade's long dispute which has hampered progress in the country’s accession to the European Union and set a positive example for the wider Western Balkans region.”
