Consular Strategy 2019-2022

Through Consular Assistance, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade assists thousands of Irish citizens in distress abroad annually. The number of Irish people traveling, working and living abroad is at record levels and with this comes an ever-greater demand for consular assistance. This Strategy addresses, and aligns our resources to, emerging travel trends, and to associated growing demands for Consular Assistance.

The strategy has been developed to set out clear and ambitious objectives for the Department to continue to improve the service it provides to Irish citizens abroad in distress. It sets out a vision for the development of consular assistance over four years and focuses not only on assistance but also how citizens can be encouraged to adopt a safer approach to travel.
