Internship and Fellowship Opportunities

Internships at CHLP

CHLP is now accepting applications for Fall 2021 remote internships.

CHLP provides substantive internships to law students with strong skills in legal analysis and writing. Although internships are unpaid, CHLP will support interns’ efforts to secure funding and/or course credit. Interns typically work 10-12 hours each week for 10 weeks, but this can be adjusted based on funding or credit requirements. CHLP anticipates the fall 2021 internship will be remote. For applicants based in New York City, on-site internship hours are a possibility, but this determination will be made considering all relevant factors and with the intern’s input.

As a national leader in HIV policy development, CHLP provides interns with the opportunity to work on the following projects:

• The Positive Justice Project is a national coalition coordinated by CHLP and organized to end criminal laws targeting people living with HIV and other infectious diseases. We engage in federal and state policy advocacy; resource creation; support of local advocates and attorneys working on HIV criminal cases; and educating, organizing and mobilizing communities and policymakers in the United States.
• Teen SENSE and the Sexual Health Youth Advocacy Coalition (SHYAC) advocate for written policies guaranteeing LGBT-inclusive/affirming sexual healthcare and sexual health literacy programming in juvenile detention, foster care, and other state-operated youth facilities.
• CHLP’s signature HIV Policy Resource Bank is a free online database of legal memoranda, research, reports, legal guides, court and agency decisions, pleadings and briefs, policy analyses and recommendations, and other materials on topics of importance to people living with HIV and their advocates. 

Assignments will likely include legal research in support of advocacy for individuals in civil commitment or on sex offender registries, research to assist attorneys advising state coalitions, first drafts of content for CHLP publications, and analyses for the HIV Policy Resource Bank. Other projects will be assigned as they arise.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: The applicant must be a law student with excellent analytical skills and the ability to engage in thoughtful and thorough research independently. The applicant must be a skilled writer with the ability to describe and analyze research findings clearly and concisely, and the ability to identify and consider additional issues raised by these findings. Experience in human rights — particularly the rights of LGBT people, women, people of color, and/or youth — is preferred, but not required. Demonstrated interest in social justice strongly preferred. Rising 3Ls/4Ls are encouraged to apply. Rising 2Ls with strong qualifications will also be considered.

A Fellowship with CHLP

The Center for HIV Law and Policy (CHLP) welcomes the opportunity to partner with a current law student, judicial clerk, or other eligible individual to develop a public interest fellowship such as an Equal Justice Works, Soros Justice, Skadden, or Liman Fellowship. A fellowship with CHLP affords an aspiring and gifted individual the opportunity to join our mission to reduce the impact of HIV on the most marginalized communities, support and increase the advocacy power and HIV expertise of attorneys, community members and service providers, and advance policy initiatives that are grounded in and uphold social justice, science and the public health.
