Five Point Friday

Here’s your roundup of the five most interesting things I’m enjoying or thinking about this week.

1.) Medvedev Runs Into Camera

During his semi-final match against Andre Rublev at the Western & Southern Open, Daniil Medvedev collided with a camera at 1-1 in the second set. It was unusual, to say the least, and appeared to throw him off his game. After winning the first set, he went on to lose the match in three.

2.) US Open & Mental Health

New for 2021, the USTA launched a mental health initiative to broaden medical care available to players. The program will include licensed mental health providers and quiet rooms, among other support services. The announcement comes on the heels of the struggles Naomi Osaka has shared publically, along with the difficulties brought on by the global pandemic.

3.) Bathroom Break Questioned

After the first set in his semi-final match against Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas took a bathroom break and brought his bag to change his clothes. Zverev accused him of receiving coaching on his phone that he believes he brought with him during the break. Of course, there’s no way to confirm he did or didn’t, but a shot of his father and coach texting in the stands during the break certainly didn’t help the narrative.

Here Zverev’s Take on It

4.) Sabalenka’s Career-High Rank

On Monday, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus overtook Naomi Osaka as world No. 2, marking a career-high. She’s now the 39th woman to reach the top 2 in WTA ranking history and the second-highest-ranked Belarusian after former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka.

5.) Tough Miss by Isner

During John Isner’s 3rd round match at the Western & Southern Open, Benoรฎt Paire threw up a poor lob just above Isner’s head that he couldn’t manage to convert. Most of us have been there before – a total gimme with the court wide open that doesn’t go our way.

If you have a moment, Iโ€™d love to hear your feedback. Which topic is your favorite? What would you like to see more or less of each week?
