To promote the festivals carried on affectionately by the local people, Ms. Hanae Ito, an Olympian (Swimming), attended the Spinning Yagura Bon-Odori Dance Festival in Iwaki City and danced the Tokyo Gorin Ondo 2020 with the local children.
Connecting to tomorrow with the power of sport
Tokyo 2020 Games aim to support the recovery efforts in the Tohoku region and to encourage people who are participating in rebuilding initiatives for local communities in areas affected by natural disasters. The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) have been involved in many events and activities to empower people from these affected communities.
Many athletes have paid visits to the Tohoku region after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The experience has given these athletes a renewed perspective about the power of sport and the role of athletes in society. During the Tokyo bid for the 2020 Games, the Japanese delegation proposed to the IOC its intention for Japan to demonstrate the power of sport to the world and leave a positive legacy for future generations through the Tokyo 2020 Games.
After winning the bid, a number of natural disasters occurred in Japan. In is in these times of difficulty that sport can play a vital role. Sport has the power to connect people and encourage people to have a dream. It can also light up the children's lives with laughter and joy. As the athletes become a symbol of hope to the people, Tokyo 2020 will work closely with our partners to make the best possible Tokyo 2020 Games and provide inspiration and motivation to those people who are rebuilding their lives.

Tokyo 2020 Torch Relay
The Olympic flame was ignited in Greece on Thursday 12 March, 2020, and arrived at Matsushima Airbase in Higashimatsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture on Friday 20 March. The flame was exhibited in various locations in the Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima prefectures as the "Flame of Recovery," symbolising the desire to recover from the Great East Japan Earthquake.
